Operations & Safety Advisor

Fuel Transportation Division

Position Summary

Brandon Petroleum Sales Ltd. is seeking an experienced and proactive Operations & Safety Advisor to lead and support safety, compliance, training, and fleet maintenance initiatives within our fuel transportation operations.

This position plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with transportation, occupational health and safety, and dangerous goods regulations while supporting operational excellence across the fleet. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and improving COR safety programs, driver compliance, employee training, fleet maintenance processes, and regulatory requirements to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of petroleum products.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on individual with strong industry knowledge, exceptional organizational skills, and a passion for developing a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Safety & COR Program Management

- Administer and continuously improve the company's COR-certified Health and Safety Program.
- Lead internal COR audits and coordinate external COR certification and maintenance activities.
- Ensure compliance with Occupational Health & Safety legislation, National Safety Code (NSC) requirements, and company policies.
- Conduct workplace inspections, field observations, and safety audits.
- Lead incident and near-miss investigations, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.
- Track and report safety performance metrics, trends, and improvement initiatives.
- Chair safety meetings and lead weekly truck inspections.
- Maintain and update safety policies, procedures, safe work practices, and emergency response plans.

Driver & Employee Compliance

- Oversee driver qualification files and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Monitor driver abstracts, licensing requirements, medical certifications, and safety performance.
- Manage Hours of Service compliance and review electronic logging device (ELD) reporting.
- Ensure compliance with Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations.
- Monitor and document employee training certifications and recertification requirements.




- Support disciplinary and corrective action processes related to safety and compliance issues.
- Conduct field assessments and driver evaluations to reinforce operational standards and safe driving practices.

Training & Development

- Develop and deliver new hire orientations, driver onboarding, and safety training programs.
- Coordinate and maintain training programs for:
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG)
- Hours of Service
- Defensive Driving
- Emergency Response
- Load Management
- Fatigue Management
- Spill Response
- Workplace Hazard Assessments
- Maintain employee training records and competency evaluations.
- Provide ongoing coaching and mentorship to drivers and operational personnel.
- Identify training gaps and develop continuous improvement plans.

Fleet Maintenance & Asset Compliance

- Oversee fleet maintenance compliance programs and monitor preventive maintenance schedules.
- Ensure commercial vehicles, tank trailers, and equipment meet regulatory inspection requirements.
- Manage maintenance records, inspection documentation, and repair histories.
- Monitor National Safety Code safety fitness requirements and vehicle inspection compliance.
- Coordinate with maintenance vendors and internal personnel to ensure timely repairs and minimal equipment downtime.
- Analyze maintenance trends and recommend strategies to improve fleet reliability and operational efficiency.
- Support annual equipment audits and regulatory inspections.

Operations Support

- Partner with operations management to improve efficiency, service delivery, and operational performance.
- Assist with route optimization, resource planning, and fleet utilization initiatives.
- Support operational investigations involving service disruptions, equipment failures, and regulatory issues.
- Monitor key performance indicators related to safety, compliance, maintenance, and fleet performance.
- Participate in company-wide continuous improvement initiatives.





Qualifications

Required

- Diploma or degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Transportation Management, Business, Logistics, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in transportation, fuel hauling, logistics, fleet operations, or safety management.
- Strong knowledge of:
- COR Programs
- National Safety Code (NSC)
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG)
- Hours of Service Regulations
- Occupational Health & Safety legislation
- Commercial vehicle compliance requirements
- Experience conducting incident investigations and safety audits.
- Strong understanding of fleet maintenance management practices.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and fleet management software.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License (Class 1 preferred).

Preferred

- CRSP, NCSO, or equivalent safety designation.
- Experience in petroleum, bulk fuel, hazardous materials, or transportation operations.
- Auditor certification related to COR programs.
- Knowledge of Alberta transportation regulations and fuel industry standards.
