PURPOSE: Reporting to the Office Manager, the purpose of the Janitor is to maintain a high standard of cleanliness for various departments within the Public Works office. You will perform custodial duties, minor maintenance and other miscellaneous tasks to ensure the building is maintained in a healthy, safe and sanitary manner. This position requires a proactive, effective, and detail-oriented approach to ensure the productivity and wellbeing of staff and building occupants.
This is a part-time (8 hours per week) position, in office with minimal local travel required.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: The position includes paid training, paid vacation and paid sick leave. Depending on experience, the position starts at $22.17-$23.49 per hour ($40,353.07 - $42,755.84 annually).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure a positive experience for building occupants and community by maintaining professionalism and a high standard of cleanliness
- Prepare cleaning preservatives and disinfectant solutions and supplies according to MSDS information
- Clean offices and meeting rooms; including but not limited to mopping linoleum and epoxy floors, vacuuming carpeted areas, dusting all furniture, fixtures and windowsills
- Maintain cleanliness of entrance/exit ways including glass, doors, handles and windows by dusting, wiping and/or polishing as required
- Clean, wash and disinfect sinks, floors, toilets, hand dryers, fixtures and countertops; spot clean walls, doors, and toilet partitions; replenish toilet tissue and soap as needed
- Clean and sanitize shared spaces like break rooms, kitchens, and coffee stations ensuring appliances (microwaves, refrigerators, sinks etc.) are clean and sanitized
- Conduct deep cleaning tasks on a periodic basis (e.g. window washing, high dusting etc.)
- Collect and empty all waste baskets, garbage cans and changing bags daily
- Dispose of refuse and maintain clean refuse areas
- Maintain storage areas and cleaning equipment, materials and supplies in a safe and orderly manner to ensure the safety of staff and public
- Provide the Office Manager with supply order information in advance of required delivery date
- Communicate with supervisors or office staff regarding issues, special requests and/or feedback
- Perform and/or report minor maintenance repairs (light bulb replacement, door hardware, plumbing problems, broken fixtures etc.)
- Open and lock doors, check security equipment and report unsafe or faulty equipment to supervisor
- Maintain various logs, checklists, janitorial supply and other records
- Move office furniture, supplies, or equipment as needed for cleaning or re-organizing
- Respond promptly to special cleaning requests from office personnel
- Other related duties as required
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (please attach all required documents)
- Grade 12 graduation
- Successful completion of Building Service Worker certificate or a related janitorial training program is an asset
- 2 years of janitorial experience preferred
- Valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License, satisfactory driver’s abstract, and reliable vehicle required
- Certified Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (W.H.M.I.S) required
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (C.R.C.) required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Strong organizational skills
- Strong time management skills with the ability to multitask
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively under minimal supervision
- Must be reliable and demonstrate sound work ethics
- Able to meet physical demands of janitorial/custodial duties: standing, walking, bending, heavy lifting and operation of cleaning equipment
- Must be able to safely lift up to 50lbs.
- Must have knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, products and equipment
- Ability to read/understand labels and instructions on the use and application of cleaning chemicals and products
- Understand importance of confidentiality
- Must have knowledge of janitorial tools and equipment use
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff and visitors
