Business Development Manager — Dedicated Freight (Dry Van & Flatbed)
Vanguard Transport Inc. | Brampton / Milton, ON | Full-Time**
The Role
We're looking for a Business Development Manager who can go out and win dedicated contracts — the kind of consistent, repeatable freight that keeps trucks loaded 52 weeks a year instead of chasing loads every morning.
This is a hunting role. You'll be identifying shippers, getting in front of logistics and procurement decision-makers, getting us into RFP and bid cycles, and closing multi-lane or dedicated agreements for both dry van and flatbed capacity.
You'll report directly to ownership. There's no layer of management between you and the people who can say yes to a deal — if a customer needs a decision on pricing, equipment, or service levels, you'll get an answer the same day.
What You'll Do
- Prospect and develop direct shipper relationships across Ontario, Quebec, and the US Midwest
- Target dedicated and contracted freight opportunities in manufacturing, automotive, building products, steel, CPG, and retail distribution
- Manage the full sales cycle: prospecting, discovery, pricing, RFP/bid submissions, onboarding, and contract execution
- Work with ownership and operations to price lanes accurately and profitably
- Complete carrier onboarding through shipper portals and vetting platforms (RMIS, MyCarrierPackets, Highway, Transporeon, and similar)
- Maintain a documented pipeline and report on activity, opportunities, and closed business
- Support the transition of new accounts to operations and stay involved as the relationship grows
What You Bring
- 3+ years of sales experience with an asset-based carrier or in transportation sales (carrier-side experience strongly preferred over brokerage-side)
- A working book of shipper contacts in Ontario, Quebec, and/or the US Midwest that you can bring with you
- Proven experience closing dedicated or contracted freight — not just spot loads
- Solid understanding of dry van and flatbed operations, including securement requirements, permits, and oversize considerations
- Cross-border knowledge: PARS/PAPS, ACE/ACI eManifest, customs broker coordination, C-TPAT
- Strong rate literacy — you understand cost per mile, deadhead, fuel surcharge tables, detention, and accessorials, and you can price a lane that makes money
- Comfort with CRM tools and a disciplined approach to pipeline management
- Valid driver's licence and ability to travel to customer sites; ability to cross the US border
- Self-directed. You won't be micromanaged, and you shouldn't need to be.
Nice to Have
- Existing relationships with automotive OEMs or Tier 1 suppliers
- Experience selling for a growing carrier (under 50 trucks) where service and flexibility are the pitch
- Bilingual English/French for the Quebec market
Compensation
- Uncapped commission on gross margin from accounts you source
- Vehicle allowance / company vehicle
- Health and dental benefits
- Laptop can be provided
- Travel and customer entertainment expenses covered
