ABOUT US AND THE ROLE

JVBC is a family-run custom cabinet shop in Kerwood. We build kitchens, vanities, wall units, closets and built-ins. Everything we make goes into someone’s home—usually the room they spend the most time in.

We’re looking for a skilled cabinetmaker to join us as our Second Hand / Assistant Lead. You’ll work directly alongside the Lead Cabinet Maker, turning plans into finished cabinetry, supporting daily production and keeping projects moving.

This is a hands-on position, not a clipboard job. You’ll be trusted to organize and complete assigned work independently, make decisions within our drawings and standards, assist less-experienced staff and step up when the Lead is unavailable.

We currently build without a CNC, so the person making the cabinet needs to understand the work. A CNC purchase is part of our two-year plan, creating an opportunity to learn and grow with the shop.

WHY YOU SHOULD WORK FOR US

- This role has somewhere to go. As JVBC grows, the right person can develop into a Lead Cabinet Maker or Production Lead.
- You’ll have real responsibility. Once priorities are clear, you’ll be trusted to organize and complete your work without constant supervision.
- You’ll be heard. Our weekly game-plan meeting covers production, priorities and improvements. If something needs attention, we would rather fix it than defend it.
- Your name is on the work. The cabinetry you build this week may be installed next week, and you’ll know how it went.
- Our shop is fully equipped, and we use Mozaik to produce shop drawings.
- The work has variety: kitchens, vanities, closets, wall units and custom built-ins.
- We work hard and push when deadlines require it, but people laugh here. We value that and protect it.

WHAT WILL BE EXPECTED OF YOUThe work

- Build custom cabinetry to plan and to JVBC’s quality standards.
- Work with the Lead to carry out weekly production priorities.
- Take ownership of assigned cabinets or projects from material preparation through final assembly.
- Organize your work and help coordinate workflow, materials and job sequencing.




- Review drawings, measurements and material requirements before starting.
- Complete quality checks and catch problems before installation.
- Make appropriate decisions within approved plans while knowing when to involve the Lead.
- Act as the shop-floor point person when the Lead is unavailable or when directed by management.
- Help train and support less-experienced employees.
- Keep the shop clean and organized.
- Track time and materials accurately on the shop tablet each day.
- Report drawing questions, shortages and production problems early enough to correct them.
- Assist with packing, loading and final checks when required.

- You own your work—the wins and the mistakes. Nobody gets in trouble for admitting they cut something wrong. Hiding it until it causes a return trip is the issue.
- You work well with direction but do not need constant supervision.
- You support the Lead and understand when to take initiative, ask questions or involve management.
- You can take a joke and make one, but know when it is time to focus.
- You bring good energy and want to keep learning.

THE PRACTICAL STUFF

- Three to seven or more years of full-time cabinetmaking experience is preferred. This is not an entry-level role.
- Able to read shop drawings, layouts, measurements and cut lists.
- Comfortable using traditional cabinetmaking tools and equipment.
- Able to complete assigned work independently after priorities are established.
- Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Overtime may be available.
- On site 10 minutes early, with boots on and ready to work at 8:00 a.m.




- On time and prepared for the weekly shop game-plan meeting.
- Full participation in our weekly 20’s meeting. We’ll explain it during the interview; it is one of the better parts of working here.
- Able to safely lift and handle a 4-by-8 sheet.
- Able to operate a forklift or willing to learn.
- Valid Ontario driver’s licence.

GROWTH CHANCE This role provides a genuine path toward greater responsibility. As you demonstrate quality, good judgment, strong communication and the ability to help others, you may take on more project ownership, workflow planning, training, quality control and leadership duties.

Advancement into a Lead Cabinet Maker or Production Lead position will be based on performance, dependability, leadership ability and company growth—not simply time served.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

Twelve months in, we’ll know this worked when:

- The Lead can rely on you to complete assigned work correctly and on time.
- You can take a cabinet or project through production without constant supervision.
- Cabinetry leaves the shop with minimal defects and installations require little or no rework.
- Problems, shortages and drawing questions are communicated promptly.
- The shop remains clean and organized.
- Material waste is reduced because you plan cuts and know what is available.
- Less-experienced employees are better because you help them.
- You can confidently take on additional responsibility when the Lead is unavailable.

The best measure of our shop work is a quiet installation.
