Course Description/Relevant Employment Duties

NUCLST 2N03 - Nuclear Technology & Society

Introduction to international nuclear policy, non-proliferation treaties, environmental and public health policies, and safety and security policies. This course will explore the interface between nuclear technology and society: an introduction to international nuclear policy, global non-proliferation regime, environmental and public health policy, safety and security policy, and stakeholder engagement. The context will be international with a focus on Canada.

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

1. Explain how the interface between nuclear technology and society has evolved from the mid-20th century to

the present.

Describe the global non-proliferation regime and Canada’s historical role.
2. Explain how safety, security, and safeguards are interrelated, and how societal expectations have impacted

policies in each area.
1. Explain how nuclear technology impacts the environment and public health, and how societal perceptions of

this have evolved.
1. Describe the importance of stakeholder engagement, including indigenous engagement, and how this has

evolved in the nuclear sector.
1. Describe the potential role of nuclear technology in sustainable development, globally and within Canada.

Required Qualifications – Post Secondary Degree Preferred Qualifications – Master’s Degree and five years or more relevant industry experience
