Role Description This Statistician Freelance role is a remote position working EST hours.

Our client is an engineering firm building predictive models of subsurface geological layers to support energy projects, such as geothermal, CO2 and hydrogen storage, oil and gas, and critical minerals.

They are looking for a freelance statistician to design, validate, and document the statistical foundation of these models, working closely with in house geoscientists and engineers.

Projects differ in data, objectives, and timelines, so each engagement is scoped separately with the client's project lead. The right person can get up to speed quickly and adapt their methods to different datasets and questions.

What you will do:

- Agree on the modeling approach with geoscientists and engineers, including which layer properties matter most (e.g., thickness, depth, porosity, permeability, lithology)
- Assess, clean,



and integrate geological data such as well logs, core samples, seismic attributes, and borehole measurements
- Build spatial and statistical models that predict layer properties and boundaries, including where data is sparse
- Quantify and communicate uncertainty (probabilistic outputs, confidence intervals, scenario ranges)
- Validate models against held-out wells or field data
- Deliver reproducible code and explicit technical documentation
- Present assumptions, results, and limitations to technical and non-technical audiences

Qualifications

- Strong foundation in Statistics and Mathematics, with the ability to apply statistical theory to real-world data problems.
- Proficiency in Statistical Programming (e.g., R, Python, SAS) for data manipulation, analysis, and model implementation.
- Solid Analytical Skills for interpreting complex data sets, identifying trends, and translating findings into actionable recommendations.
- Experience with Statistical Modeling, including regression, classification, forecasting, and model validation techniques.
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, or a related quantitative field.
