About the Role
The Youth Outreach Worker (YOW) is a frontline prevention and early intervention position within Mental Health & Addictions. Working with youth and young adults up to age 29, the Youth Outreach Worker provides community-based outreach, brief intervention, mental health promotion, addictions prevention, system navigation, and connection to services.

This position focuses on building trusting relationships with youth where they live, learn, work, and gather. Services are delivered through schools, community organizations, recreation settings, virtual platforms, and other community locations. The Youth Outreach Worker supports youth experiencing early signs of mental health, substance use, social, emotional, or life challenges and helps connect them to appropriate supports before concerns escalate into crisis.

Key Responsibilities
Build trusting, strengths-based relationships with youth and young adults.
Provide brief supportive interventions, risk assessments, safety planning, and referrals.
Support youth experiencing mental health concerns, substance use issues,



social and emotional challenges, or other life stressors.
Facilitate youth-centred workshops, awareness initiatives, and group programming focused on mental wellness, resilience, life skills, and healthy coping.
Support youth in navigating health, education, social, and community systems.
Collaborate with families, schools, Indigenous organizations, municipalities, and community partners.
Maintain documentation, workload statistics, and reports in accordance with organizational standards.
Participate in multidisciplinary consultation, community development initiatives, and service planning activities.
Contribute to program development, quality improvement, and evaluation activities to support the ongoing enhancement of youth services.

Required Qualifications
Degree or diploma in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, Sociology, Community Studies, or related field.
Specialized education or training in mental health, addictions, youth engagement, harm reduction, suicide prevention, and/or brief intervention would be considered an asset.

Required Experience
Experience working with children, youth, young adults, and families.
Experience delivering community-based programs, outreach services,



education sessions, or youth engagement initiatives.
Experience supporting individuals experiencing mental health, addictions, trauma, or social challenges would be considered an asset.

Required Knowledge and Skills
Demonstrated ability to engage and build rapport with youth.
Knowledge of child and adolescent development.
Knowledge of mental health promotion, addictions prevention, and harm reduction practices.
Understanding of trauma-informed, culturally safe, and youth-centred approaches.
Ability to provide brief intervention, supportive counselling, and system navigation support.
Strong communication, facilitation, and presentation skills.
Ability to establish collaborative relationships with schools, community organizations, and service providers.
Strong organizational, documentation, and time-management skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
Demonstrated problem-solving, leadership, and program development skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgement.
