Join a Team that puts People First!

At Calvert Home Mortgage (CHMIC), we do things differently. As a full-service alternative mortgage investment firm, we don’t just fund mortgages—we empower homeowners, investors, and brokers to achieve their goals by seeing the person behind every mortgage.

We are on a mission to become Canada’s most trusted lending solution, and we do that by putting people first, always doing the right thing, and building real relationships—because at the end of the day, relationships matter more than transactions.

Simply put, our team is the best in the business. Our expertise is second to none, but it’s our caring, people-first approach that truly sets us apart. Founded on the principle of “kitchen table lending,” we take the time to listen, educate, and find the right solutions for our clients—something that, in our experience, isn’t always the norm.

We’re looking for an experienced Underwriter to join our team and be part of an exciting, growth-focused company that truly cares about its employees. At Calvert Home Mortgage, our culture is built on the foundation of our core values: Service, Trust, Education, People, and Solutions. These aren’t just words to us—they guide everything we do, from how we serve our clients to how we support our team. We believe in fostering a positive, collaborative, and rewarding work environment where you can thrive, contribute, and grow with us for the long term.

Why You'll Love Working at Calvert:

- Competitive Salary & Bonus Program – Your hard work pays off!
- Share Ownership – Be a part of our success.
- Extended Health & Dental Benefits – Comprehensive coverage for you and your family, including access to a Health Care Spending Account up to $4,000!
- Work-Life Balance – Enjoy a location that avoids the downtown commute.

At Calvert Home Mortgage, you’ll be more than just an employee—you’ll be part of a tight-knit team that values you, supports you, and celebrates your success. If you’re ready to build a career where your work truly makes an impact, we’d love to hear from you.

WHAT’S THE BIG IDEA?

You already know that alternative lending isn’t about checking boxes. Every file has a story, and great underwriting means knowing which questions to ask, where the real risk sits, and how to find a solution that makes sense for both the borrower and the lender.

That’s where you come in.

As an Underwriter at Calvert, you’ll use your experience and judgment to assess mortgage applications, structure solutions, and make sound lending decisions in an environment where no two files are quite the same. You’ll work closely with brokers and our internal teams to move deals forward while balancing responsive service with responsible lending.

We’re looking for someone who already understands the pace, complexity, and creativity of private and alternative mortgage lending and is ready to continue building their expertise, lending authority, and impact.

HOW DO WE WORK?

We work as trusted advisors, providing short-term lending solutions for the personal and financial success of our clients. Underwriters collaborate with business development, valuation, funding, and other teams to understand each file, apply our lending policies, and make timely decisions. We value thoughtful judgment, clear communication, and a proactive approach in a fast-paced environment.

HOW DO YOU FIT IN?

You will bring the following experience and strengths:

- A minimum of 2 years of direct mortgage underwriting experience within the private or alternative lending space. This is a requirement for the role.
- Demonstrated experience reviewing and adjudicating mortgage applications, including assessing borrower credit, capacity, collateral, property information, and overall lending risk.
- Experience making and documenting lending decisions within assigned authority and escalating or recommending files outside of authority limits.
- Knowledge of mortgage lending laws and regulations and a solid understanding of underwriting policies, procedures, and due diligence requirements.
- Sound research, analysis, and decision-making skills, with the ability to identify risk while also looking for practical lending solutions.
- Strong communication and active listening skills for building effective relationships with mortgage brokers, borrowers, and internal partners.
- The ability to manage multiple active files and competing priorities while providing timely, responsive service and maintaining strong attention to detail.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with underwriting or mortgage management software is an asset.
- A high school diploma or equivalent.

Post-secondary education or an applicable designation is considered an asset.
- Availability for regular local property inspections and client visits, with occasional travel for trade shows or presentations.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING Underwriting and Credit Decisions (70%)

- Review mortgage applications and supporting documents; evaluate borrower credit, capacity, collateral, and relevant market conditions.
- Complete due diligence, make decisions within your lending authority, and present recommendations on files outside your limits.
- Follow underwriting policies and procedures, record decisions and tasks accurately in the CRM, prepare commitment letters, and review legal reporting.

Broker and Client Relationships (10%)

- Build relationships with mortgage brokers, real estate investors, and builders; support client retention and identify potential mortgage opportunities.
- Contribute to weekly underwriting sales and operations meetings.
