About United for Literacy

United for Literacy is a national charitable literacy organization, established in 1899 on the belief that literacy is a right. We work collaboratively with community-based agencies across Canada to provide targeted, innovative literacy and numeracy support where it’s needed most. Each year, more than 31,000 children, youth, and adults participate in our programs in over 160 communities across the country.

We are looking for volunteers who are interested in tutoring with one of our community partners, MOSAIC, at the Current Westminster Secondary School. Homework Club is a homework support program focused on developing English and math skills.

Homework Club operates on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3-5pm with support needed for set-up and takedown.The club is open to elementary school students on Tuesdays and middle school students on Wednesdays. It is ideal for volunteers to commit to at least one session per week; however, any form of consistent commitment is appreciated. We are looking for volunteers who are interested in tutoring English and math, and are willing to work directly with secondary school students on their homework assignments and life skills.

Requirements

- An inclusive, respectful approach to working with students, that prioritizes the student's strengths and goals
- A solution-oriented and flexible attitude, as every session can be different
- Have knowledge in math
- Willing to commit to a regular tutoring schedule and show up for all sessions in-person
- Willing to lead conversations and motivate learners in a dynamic group setting




- Must commit to coming in at 2:45pm to support with set-up and stay till 5:30pm for takedown
- No teaching experience is necessary - our volunteers come from many different backgrounds and experiences!

Who We're Looking For

We welcome volunteers who are:

- Comfortable tutoring math and English
- Friendly, inclusive, and patient when working with learners at different skill levels
- Fluency in additional languages is an asset
- Enthusiastic, flexible, and creative in their approach to facilitation and learner support
- Reliable and able to make a consistent weekly commitment
- Open to learning. No teaching experience required; training and ongoing support are provided by United for Literacy
- Command of Tigrinya, Arabic and/or Spanish is an asset but not required
