Associate Physician, Acute Mental Health Team BC Children’s Hospital

The Associate Physician, Acute Mental Health Team, practices under the directionand supervision of an attending Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at BCChildren’s Hospital. The Associate Physician provides assessment and short-termtreatment for patients who present with mental health concerns to the hospital’sEmergency Department (ED), are admitted to the Child and Adolescent PsychiatricEmergency (CAPE) Unit, and/or followed in the Link Urgent Mental Health Clinic(the Link).
As an integral member of BC Children’s Hospital’s Acute Mental Health Team, theAssociate Physician will provide support that increases capacity and servicedelivery in the Acute Mental Health service, through each of these mental healthservices (emergency, unit, clinic). The Associate Physician will be a fullmember of the Department of Psychiatry at BC Children’s Hospital.
Specific Accountabilities Medical Expertise Participate in ED mental health rounds, including mental health nursing,social work and psychiatry, as well as medical learners.
Support other areas of the Acute Mental Health Team in the Link and CAPE Unitas needed, when the ED is not busy.
Assist in the triage of patient presentations to the ED in consideration ofED team referral to the Link Clinic for follow up and assessment within 72hours.
Perform and document psychiatric assessments, risk assessments, medicationreconciliation, and safety planning for patients referred to Mental Health bythe Emergency Physician. These tasks must meet Royal College andorganizational standards, policies, and guidelines.
Referrals & Liaison Complete referrals to community resources and/or the Link at BC Children’sHospital.
Communicate with caregiver families, consultant physicians, EmergencyPhysicians, and community care resources and Family Physicians regardingpatient management plans.
Career development – Self & Others Provide teaching and supervision for medical students, residents, patientsand families, as well as interdisciplinary staff within and outside of theED.
Participate in quality improvement projects improving care for this patientpopulation, including participation in Morbidity & Mortality rounds and otherQuality Improvement and Quality Assurance or research sessions.
Participate in appropriate professional development activities (a minimum of50 hours per year, 25 hours of which must be accredited training recognizedby the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons’ Maintenance of CertificationProgram for specialty health care professionals or the BC College of FamilyPhysicians Maintenance of Certification Program.
Qualifications This position requires a medical degree from a school listed in the WorldDirectory of Medical Schools.
Applicants must have completed a minimum of twoyears of accredited postgraduate training in Psychiatry (General, Adult, orChild and Adolescent), Pediatrics, or Family Medicine, with training verified tothe satisfaction of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia(CPSBC). Applicants must meet the CPSBC English language proficiencyrequirements, demonstrate current clinical practice as required by CPSBC, and beeligible for licensure in the Associate Physician class. Applicants must also beCanadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, or legally authorized to liveand work in British Columbia.
The successful candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to beginning andcontinuing their personal learning journey related to Indigenous-specific racismand dismantling systems of oppression, as well as addressing racism morebroadly. Shows willingness to articulate and share their learning experiences tocontribute to a culture of motivation and inspiration among peers.

Understands theimpact of social determinants of health-on-health outcomes. Shows a commitmentto learning about and upholding legislative obligations and provincialcommitments outlined in foundational documents such as the Truth &Reconciliation; Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC'sDeclaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United NationsDeclaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power andPlace: Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019),the Declaration Act Action Plan, Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study,the BC Human Rights Code, Anti-Racism Data Act, and the Distinctions BasedApproach.
Salary Range: $90,770 - $141,494 per annum. The starting salary for thisposition would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’srelevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincialcompensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part timeroles.
Hours of Work: Monday – Friday; Primarily daytime and no overnight or weekendshifts expected.
