The Opportunity

Total North Communications and ComPod are looking for an AI Automation, Product & Systems Engineer to help us build practical AI systems that change how our companies operate — and create new products and services we can sell to customers.

This is not a research position and it is not a role focused on simply teaching people how to use ChatGPT.

We are looking for a builder.

Someone who can understand how work is being done today, identify where AI and automation can materially improve it, and then design and build working solutions.

Total North operates across managed IT services, telecommunications, networking, communications infrastructure, remote field services and technology integration.

ComPod designs and manufactures modular infrastructure solutions for telecommunications, remote communications, sensors, power, networking and other technology deployments.

Together, the two businesses provide an unusually broad environment for applied AI.

You may spend one week improving an IT service workflow and the next helping us develop an intelligent site-survey system, automated quoting platform, remote infrastructure monitoring solution or current AI-enabled product.

We want someone who finds that exciting.

What You Will Build

Your mandate will span three major areas:

1. Make Total North and ComPod More Efficient

We want to aggressively reduce low-value and repetitive work throughout our businesses.

Projects may include:

- AI-assisted IT ticket triage and classification
- Automated ticket summarization and documentation
- Suggested troubleshooting and resolution workflows
- Service-desk knowledge assistants
- Automated knowledge-base creation
- Reducing technician time spent on repetitive support issues
- Identifying recurring customer problems and trends
- Automating recurring invoicing
- Reviewing monthly service tickets for billing
- Identifying potentially missed billable work
- Automating administrative workflows
- Building intelligent quoting tools
- Creating scopes of work from field information
- Automating proposal and project documentation
- Generating network diagrams
- Creating project closeout documentation
- Improving inventory and procurement workflows
- Automating reporting and customer communications
- Creating internal AI agents that can securely access company information and approved business systems

The goal is straightforward:

Reduce repetitive work, improve accuracy, increase capacity and allow our people to spend more time on work that requires judgement and expertise.

2. Build AI Tools for Our Technical and Field Operations

Some of our best AI opportunities exist outside the traditional office environment.

We want to explore systems that combine AI with field technicians, telecommunications, networking, remote infrastructure and physical equipment.

One example is an AI-enabled site survey platform.

A technician could capture:

- Photos
- Video
- Voice notes
- Measurements
- Existing equipment
- Rack information
- Cabling
- Network information
- Customer requirements
- Site conditions

The system could then help generate:

- Site-survey documentation
- Existing-condition diagrams
- Proposed network diagrams
- Bills of materials
- Labour estimates
- Project scopes
- Technical recommendations
- Quote drafts
- Project documentation

We see similar opportunities across telecom, IT, power, communications infrastructure and ComPod deployments.

You will help identify these opportunities, prototype them and determine which ones deserve to become production systems.

3. Create Products and New Revenue

The role is not limited to internal automation.

When we build something internally that solves a real problem, we want to ask:

You will help us establish and operate those environments safely.

Private and On-Premises AI

A significant part of our future AI strategy involves understanding how AI can operate securely with sensitive company and customer information.

You may help us design environments involving:

- Private AI systems
- Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
- Secure enterprise knowledge systems
- Local language models
- Azure-hosted private environments
- On-premises AI infrastructure
- GPU infrastructure
- Secure model gateways
- Customer-specific agents
- Role-based access controls
- Audit logging
- Data governance
- Containerized AI applications

Over time, we believe this capability could become an important service for customers that cannot or do not want to place sensitive information into general-purpose public AI environments.

ComPod Opportunities

ComPod provides a second and very different AI playground.

We are interested in exploring how AI could improve:

- Shelter configuration
- Customer requirements gathering
- Product configuration
- Automated estimating
- Bills of materials
- Manufacturing documentation
- Design assistance
- Technical drawings
- Proposal generation
- Remote monitoring
- Predictive maintenance
- Power and environmental monitoring

There may also be opportunities to integrate AI directly into future ComPod products.

We are interested in someone who can see the connection between software, AI and physical infrastructure.

Training and Internal Capability

You will not operate as an isolated AI specialist.

An key part of this role will be helping build AI capability within our existing technical team.

You will work closely with our IT group to develop skills in areas such as:

The Person

The right person is probably naturally curious and somewhat impatient with inefficient processes.

When you see someone repeatedly copying information from one system into another, your instinct should be:

“Why are we still doing this manually?”

You should enjoy moving between business conversations and technical implementation.

One day you may be working with our accounting team.

Another day with the service desk.

Another with a telecom technician.

Another with a ComPod designer.

Another with a customer.

We are looking for someone who enjoys understanding how things actually work and then building better systems around them.

Location and Work Arrangement

Total North and ComPod are headquartered in Whitehorse, Yukon.

This position can be based in Whitehorse, and we would welcome candidates interested in relocating to the Yukon.

We are also open to a remote working arrangement within Canada for the right candidate.

Remote employees should expect to spend time physically working with our team in Whitehorse approximately once per month.

These visits are important.

This role requires understanding our employees, customers, infrastructure, field operations and workflows firsthand. We do not want this position to become a disconnected remote development role where requirements are simply passed back and forth through tickets.

We want the person building these systems to understand the people and problems they are building them for.
