Current Wage: $25.95 per hour, plus 10.6% in lieu, in accordance with the collective agreement

Schedule: This is a casual, on-call position with no guaranteed hours. Applicants must be available to work a combination of day, evening, overnight, weekend and statutory-holiday shifts. Shifts may be offered on short notice based on operational requirements and will be assigned in accordance with the collective agreement.

About Cedar Strong

Cedar Strong Prevention & Intervention Society is a community-based non-profit organization providing trauma-informed services and supports to individuals and families in Hope and the surrounding area.

Our Transition House provides a safe, supportive and confidential residential environment for women and their children who are experiencing or leaving family violence.

Position Summary

The Casual Transition House Support Worker provides trauma-informed, non-judgmental and practical support to women and children staying at the Transition House. The worker responds to crises, assists with safety planning, provides information and referrals, supports residents with established goals, and helps maintain a safe, welcoming and well-functioning communal living environment.

Casual employees may be called upon to cover day, evening, overnight, weekend and statutory-holiday shifts. The position may involve working alone or with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities

- Resident Support
- Provide trauma-informed, non-judgmental emotional and practical support.
- Support residents with established goals while respecting their choices, dignity and autonomy.
- Provide information about family violence, its effects and available options.
- Assist residents with individualized safety planning.
- Provide information and referrals related to community, legal, justice, housing and other support services.
- Advocate for and accompany residents or former residents when appropriate and within the scope of the role.
- Respond appropriately to crises and changing resident needs.

Intake and Discharge

- Screen potential residents in accordance with established admission criteria.
- Coordinate resident arrivals and provide orientation to the Transition House and house guidelines.
- Complete required intake, demographic, case-note and admission documentation.
- Support discharge planning, including reviewing safety plans, providing referrals and assisting with departure arrangements.
- Refer residents to appropriate Cedar Strong and community services.

Crisis Calls and Documentation





- Answer crisis and program telephone calls.
- Provide emotional support, safety-planning assistance, information and referrals.
- Screen and direct calls to the appropriate program, resource or staff member.
- Maintain confidentiality and document calls in accordance with established procedures.
- Complete accurate, objective and timely resident notes, communication logs, statistical records and other required documentation.
- Provide clear shift handovers concerning resident needs, safety issues and outstanding follow-up.

Transition House Operations

- Help maintain a safe, welcoming, respectful and trusting communal environment.
- Monitor the security of the premises and promptly report safety, maintenance or repair concerns.
- Support residents in following house guidelines and shared-living expectations.
- Respond to resident conflict using trauma-informed and de-escalation practices.
- Assist with resident meetings and appropriate group activities.
- Help ensure common areas and resident rooms are prepared and maintained.
- Participate in housekeeping, food management, grocery shopping, errands, inventory and other practical duties as required.

Support for Children and Families

- Interact with children through age-appropriate activities, play and conversation.
- Model respectful, non-violent parenting approaches.
- Provide appropriate information and support to parents while respecting their role and autonomy.
- Report child-protection concerns in accordance with legal and organizational requirements.

Professional Responsibilities

- Maintain professional boundaries with residents, former residents, colleagues and community partners.
- Protect the confidentiality of residents and the location of the Transition House.
- Follow Cedar Strong’s policies, procedures, Code of Ethics and program philosophy.
- Work cooperatively with other members of the Transition House team.
- Attend required staff meetings, training and professional-development activities.
- Complete other related duties consistent with the position.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

- Diploma in a related human- or social-services field.
- At least one year of recent related experience in the social-services sector, either paid or volunteer.
- An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.




- Experience supporting women and children affected by family or gender-based violence is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

- Understanding of trauma-informed, survivor-centred and non-judgmental practice.
- Knowledge of family violence, safety planning, crisis intervention and community resources.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions with minimal supervision.
- Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately during crises or unexpected situations.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to prepare clear, concise and objective documentation.
- Strong organization, time-management, problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
- Ability to work respectfully and inclusively with people from diverse cultures, identities, backgrounds and lived experiences.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Required Training

Training in the following areas is required or must be completed within the timeframe established by Cedar Strong:

- Trauma-Informed Practice
- Foundations in Violence Against Women
- Domestic Violence Safety Planning
- Managing Hostile Interactions
- Current First Aid certification with CPR-C
- Naloxone administration and overdose-response training
- Workplace-specific safety, emergency and working-alone procedures

Additional Requirements

- Unrestricted Class 5 driver’s licence.
- Access to a reliable vehicle with business-use insurance.
- Ability to perform the essential duties of the position, with accommodation where required.
- Satisfactory criminal record check with vulnerable-sector screening as a condition of employment.
- Legal entitlement to work in Canada.

Working Conditions

- Work is performed in a confidential, communal residential setting.
- The position may involve working alone for part or all of a shift.
- Work may include prolonged periods of sitting, speaking with residents or responding to telephone calls.
- Some shifts may include housekeeping, shopping, sorting donations, yard work, moving household items or transporting residents within the community.
- The work involves responding to emotionally demanding and unpredictable situations involving women and children affected by family violence.
