Your Opportunity:

Edmonton RAPID (Facilitated Access to Specialized Treatment) is seeking an experienced Occupational Therapist II to join a specialized team focused on improving access to surgical care for patients with hand and wrist conditions. Reporting to the Manager, Edmonton FAST, this position provides advanced clinical triage services for centralized referrals and plays a key role in ensuring patients are directed to the most appropriate care pathway in a timely manner. You will review and assess referrals using established clinical pathways, determine appropriateness and urgency for specialist consultation, and facilitate patient access to the most appropriate service or provider Working collaboratively with Registered Nurses, surgeons, physicians, rehabilitation professionals, and community partners, the Occupational Therapist II utilizes advanced clinical knowledge, critical thinking, and evidence-informed decision-making to assess referral appropriateness, determine urgency, and facilitate access to specialized treatment. The successful candidate will contribute to program development, quality improvement initiatives, and optimization of referral processes to enhance patient outcomes and system efficiency. This position is ideal for an Occupational Therapist with strong expertise in upper extremity, hand and wrist conditions, excellent clinical reasoning skills, and a passion for improving patient access to specialized services. Edmonton FAST supports timely patient access to specialized care by coordinating referral intake and navigation to appropriate treatment pathways. The program works collaboratively with primary care, specialty services, and rehabilitation providers to ensure patients receive the right care, at the right time, from the right provider.

Description:

As an Occupational Therapist II, you will be responsible for the coordination of occupational therapy and other allied health clinical services within a program or service area. You will provide supervision of students and team members as assigned. As an Occupational Therapist II,



you will be responsible to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team where you will be an integral member, providing leadership to other healthcare professionals. You will be making day-to-day clinical decisions on patient/family needs regarding assessment, intervention, discharge and follow-up. You will make decisions and advise team members on complex clinical cases and provide clinical leadership within the program or service area to ensure safe, efficient and effective client care. You will ensure occupational therapy practice is evidence-based and in alignment with Alberta legislation and regulations, professional standards of practice, code of ethics and PCA policy and guidelines. You will be providing coordination of the day-to-day operations of an assigned service area and monitoring care delivery, identifying service needs and assisting other medical staff with caseload management, completing chart audits and providing follow-up and feedback to staff. You will be participating in program development and operational planning and representing the department on committees or programs. You will be making decisions on staffing level requirements, workflow and caseload priorities in collaboration with managers and other healthcare providers. As assigned, you will carry out the roles of a direct clinical service provider, consultant, educator and/or advocate in your program or service area.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited university program or bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited university program and related experience. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum 5 years recent clinical experience in occupational therapy practice. Demonstrated knowledge of musculoskeletal assessment and rehabilitation principles. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong clinical reasoning, problem-solving, organizational, and workload management skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team environment. Proficiency with electronic medical records and computerized documentation systems. Recent experience in the assessment and management of upper extremity, hand and wrist conditions. Demonstrated experience applying advanced clinical reasoning to determine referral appropriateness and prioritization. Knowledge of surgical referral pathways. Experience collaborating with Registered Nurses, physicians, specialists, and community healthcare providers. Proven ability to manage high referral volumes while maintaining attention to detail and service standards. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective working relationships across multiple stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

Five years of experience in hand therapy, upper extremity rehabilitation, orthopedic practice, or a related specialty area. Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) designation or progress toward certification preferred. Experience with centralized intake, referral triage, surgical assessment, access and navigation services, quality improvement, program development, and clinical pathway design. Knowledge of provincial referral standards, access initiatives, Connect Care, and Netcare.
