Junior Athletes is a recreational sports program that helps kids build basic skills, confidence, and a positive relationship with physical activity. Children and youth of every experience level are welcome, and our focus is on learning, inclusion and fun.

We're hiring coaches for our weekend programs:
- Saturdays in Orléans: 9.00 am to 1.15 pm - Notre Place School
- Sundays in Barrhaven: 9.15 am to 12.45 pm - Barrhaven Public School
You can apply for one day or both. Coaches lead pre-developed multi-sport sessions in basketball and soccer.
A part of this role is working 1:1 with children with exceptionalities. You'll be paired with a child who needs extra support and help them take part in the session comfortably and safely, in a way that works for them. If you've worked with kids with additional support needs before, or you're patient, adaptable and want to learn, we'd love to hear from you.
Responsibilities
1:1 Inclusion Support
- Give one-on-one support to a child with exceptionalities throughout the session.
- Help the child join group activities at a level that suits them, adapting skills, drills and games as needed.
- Learn each child's needs, preferences and strategies, and use them consistently. These may include communication styles, sensory needs, and cues that help with transitions or calming.
- Help the child through transitions between activities, stations and sports.
- Recognize signs of overwhelm or distress, and respond calmly and supportively.
- Celebrate effort and small wins so the child feels successful and included.
- Share observations with the Lead Coach and, when appropriate, with parents or caregivers.
Coaching
- Lead fun, age-appropriate sessions using the Junior Athletes curriculum.
- Teach and demonstrate the basic skills, rules and techniques of basketball and soccer.
- Explain activities in a clear, simple and encouraging way.
- Give helpful feedback and correct basic technique when needed.
- Teach kids to use sports equipment safely.
- Create a positive environment where kids feel comfortable trying new things and making mistakes.
- Promote teamwork, respect, confidence, inclusion and sportsmanship.
- Supervise actively and follow all safety procedures.
- Give First Aid when needed and complete incident reports promptly.
- Set up, organize and put away equipment.
- Communicate regularly with Lead Coaches and the rest of the team.
- Arrive prepared and on time for all shifts, meetings and training.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 17 years old.
- Solid working knowledge of basketball and soccer fundamentals, and the ability to demonstrate and teach them to kids.
- Experience working with children on the autism spectrum or children with disabilities or additional support needs is a strong asset. Examples include camps, respite care, EA or ABA work, special education, and inclusive recreation.
- Previous experience coaching or working with children is strongly preferred.
- Patient, calm,
dependable and flexible. You're comfortable adjusting on the fly when a plan isn't working.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- French is a strong asset.
- Experience with ball hockey, pickleball, volleyball or other sports is an asset.
- Available Saturdays in Orléans and/or Sundays in Barrhaven.
- Available to start September 26th.
Required Certifications and Screening
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification
- Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check issued within the past 24 months
- Protected Sport Training Certificate
- AODA Training Certificate
Physical Requirements
- Able to take an active part in sports and physical activity for extended periods, including running, jumping, kneeling and squatting.
- Able to safely set up, move and store equipment.
- Comfortable in a loud, active, fast-paced environment.
Pay: $18.00-$20.00 per hour
