Senior Electrical Engineer

The Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for providing engineering support for electrical systems across the Long Lake SAGD and Upgrader facilities. The role ensures safe, reliable, and compliant operation of power generation, transmission, distribution, and electrical equipment assets while supporting maintenance, reliability, capital projects, and operational excellence initiatives.

As the site's electrical SME, the Senior Electrical Engineer develops and executes electrical reliability strategies, leads power system studies, supports brownfield modifications and project execution, manages regulatory compliance programs, and drives continuous improvement in equipment performance and asset integrity. The role works closely with Operations, Maintenance, Projects, Construction, and external engineering contractors to support the facility's business objectives.

Responsibilities:

- Provide technical deliverables for electrical assets such as high/medium/low-voltage power systems, substations and electrical distribution networks, switchgear and MCCs, transformers, motors and generators, VFDs, UPS systems, heat tracing and associated electrical infrastructure
- Lead root cause investigations of electrical failures and recurring equipment issues
- Develop and optimize preventive, predictive, and condition-based maintenance programs
- Lead equipment lifecycle management, critical spare strategy, and obsolescence planning
- Analyze system and equipment performance data to identify reliability improvement opportunities
- Oversee load flow studies, short circuit studies, arc flash assessment, protection and relay coordination studies, grounding system evaluations, system capacity and expansion assessments
- Provide electrical engineering support for sustaining capital, debottlenecking, reliability, and major capital projects
- Review and approve EPC contractor deliverables and vendor documentation
- Participate in scope development, design reviews,



HAZOPs, constructability reviews, and management of change (MOC) processes
- Support construction, maintenance outages, turnarounds, commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting activities
- Support Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), Site Acceptance Tests (SATs), energization plans, and readiness reviews
- Verify installations meet engineering specifications, safety requirements, and operational expectations
- Serve as owner and technical lead for electrical regulatory compliance programs, including AESO-related requirements
- Provide technical coaching and mentoring to engineers, technologists, maintenance personnel, and operations teams
- Support development of electrical maintenance standards, procedures, and secure work practices

Requirements:

- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with APEGA, or eligibility to obtain registration
- Minimum 10 years of electrical engineering experience in oil sands, SAGD, upgrading, refining, petrochemical, mining, power generation, or heavy industrial facilities
- Experience with both reliability engineering and project execution environments
- Strong knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), CSA Standards, IEEE Standards, IEC Standards, Alberta Utilities Commission requirements, AESO requirements, AER, ABSA and other relevant standards
- Strong understanding of industrial power systems from 480V through medium-voltage distribution systems (13.8kV, 25kV, and above)
- Strong knowledge of motors, generators, transformers, switchgear, MCCs, relays, VFDs, UPS systems, and protection systems
- Familiar with software tools such as ETAP, SKM, or equivalent electrical analysis applications
- Strong communication skills and ability to influence cross-functional teams and contractors
