Position Overview

Chinook Feeders 2024 Ltd. is seeking four experienced and dedicated Pen Checkers to join our livestock team.

The Pen Checker is responsible for the daily monitoring, care, and handling of cattle throughout the feedlot. This position requires strong observation skills, knowledge of cattle health, safe livestock-handling practices, and a commitment to animal welfare.

Key Responsibilities

● Conduct daily inspections of assigned pens and monitor cattle for signs of illness, injury, or distress.

● Identify cattle requiring treatment and follow established veterinary and feedlot protocols.

● Administer medications and treatments as directed.

● Segregate and safely move sick or injured cattle to hospital pens.

● Maintain accurate digital records of cattle health, treatments, and procedures.

● Monitor feed bunks and water systems to ensure cattle have adequate access to feed and clean water.

● Inspect fencing, water systems, feed bunks, and overall pen conditions and report issues promptly.

● Assist with facility maintenance, repairs, bedding, and general feedlot upkeep.

● Safely move and sort cattle using low-stress handling techniques.

● Assist with cattle processing, shipping, receiving, and other livestock activities.

● Operate equipment such as tractors, loaders, forklifts, and other feedlot machinery.





● Conduct equipment inspections and report maintenance concerns.

● Work closely with veterinarians, feedlot staff, and management to maintain high standards of animal care.

● Follow all company health, safety, biosecurity, and animal-welfare procedures.

Qualifications

● Minimum 2 years of livestock-handling or related experience preferred.

● Knowledge of cattle health indicators and common feedlot diseases.

● Strong cattle-handling and observation skills.

● Experience operating farm or heavy equipment is an asset.

● Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.

● Strong communication and teamwork skills.

● Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

● Physically capable of walking, lifting, and performing outdoor work.

● Ability to work in diverse weather conditions.

● Willingness to work weekends and holidays as required.
