Job Overview
W.A. Health is seeking a Trust Fund Accountant to join our accounting team. W.A. Health is a third-party administrator, located in Hamilton, Ontario, serving multiemployer benefit and pension trust funds. Reporting to the Manager of Accounting, you will be responsible for the accounting and financial reporting of a portfolio of trust funds, including investment reconciliations, complex journal entries, and the analysis of fund results. You will also review the work of our Accounting Technician and play a key role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the financial information provided to Trustees. This is an in-person role working onsite at our Hamilton office.
Responsibilities
- Reconcile investment accounts for each trust fund to custodian and investment manager statements, including market values, income, realized and unrealized gains and losses, fees, and cash transactions
- Reconcile employer contributions recorded in the accounting system to the administration system, investigate and resolve differences, and prepare any required correcting entries
- Prepare complex journal entries, including investment income and fair value adjustments, accruals, prepaids, inter-fund and inter-class allocations, and reclassifications, with transparent supporting documentation
- Prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements for each trust fund for review by the Manager of Accounting
- Analyze trust fund financial statements for trends, variances, and issues, including contributions, claims, premiums, administrative expenses, and investment performance, and communicate findings with clear explanations
- Review monthly bank reconciliations prepared by the Accounting Technician, follow up on reconciling items, and provide guidance and feedback
- Complete month-end and quarter-end close procedures for assigned trust funds within established deadlines
- Maintain balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules for all assigned funds
- Support the annual audit process by preparing year-end working papers and schedules and responding to auditor requests
- Assist with regulatory and tax filings and other compliance reporting as required
- Recommend and support improvements to trust fund accounting processes and internal controls
- Assist with special projects and Trustee reporting requests as required
Requirements
- A clear understanding of Canadian accounting standards, including those applicable to pension plans and not-for-profit organizations
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in full-cycle accounting, including financial statement preparation, audits, and reconciliations
- Demonstrated experience reconciling investment accounts and preparing complex journal entries
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to identify trends, variances, and unusual items and explain them clearly
- Experience reviewing the work of others and providing constructive feedback
- Experience with accounting software (QuickBooks Online)
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy
- Ability to manage multiple funds and meet deadlines
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to adhere to company policies and use discretion in maintaining confidentiality of member and fund information
Preferred Qualifications:
- CPA designation (or working towards it)
- Experience in trust fund, pension, fund, or not-for-profit accounting
- Experience with multiemployer benefit or pension plans, or with a third-party administrator
- Experience with financial statement auditing, or liaising with external auditors.
- Familiarity with custodian and investment manager reporting

Pay: $75,000.00-$90,000.00 per year
