Our client is seeking an experienced finance leader to join their Senior Leadership Team as Vice President, Finance.
Reporting to the CFO and serving as a trusted business partner and member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Vice President, Finance will be hands-on and involved in all aspects of the organization's finance function - providing guidance, advice, support, and financial leadership to help drive the business forward. You will provide direction to the finance team, with broad functional responsibility for accounting and financial reporting; internal controls; planning, forecasting, and budgeting; financial analysis and decision support; and financial systems and process improvement.
What We Offer
- Competitive compensation, including eligibility for short- and long-term incentive plans
- Comprehensive health benefits
- Retirement savings plan (+ employer matching contributions)
- Professional dues and continuing education support
- Cell phone and internet allowance
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Team
- Take ownership of the finance/accounting department - its people, tools, and processes - assessing current state within the first 30/60/90 days and building a roadmap for improvement in partnership with the CFO
- Lead, coach, mentor, and develop the finance team to ensure stability, capability, motivation, and succession, while driving greater automation and simplification of core accounting processes
- Contribute to organizational profitability through recommendations on organizational structure, cost containment, and process improvements within the finance function
- Operate as a genuine cross-departmental collaborator - a direct, low-politics communicator who can work effectively with colleagues at every level, from mentoring junior staff to engaging the CFO, fellow VPs, and the Board
- Be viewed as a trusted, approachable finance partner rather than solely a compliance or “gatekeeper” presence
Accounting and Financial Reporting
- Ensure the timely and accurate preparation of financial reports in accordance with Canadian GAAP, together with analysis of results for review with the CFO
- Provide oversight of internal controls, financial policies, and procedures required to maintain the integrity of financial results and reporting
- Provide strategic oversight of the organization's financial information systems, continuously evaluating and implementing improvements to support business growth and reporting integrity
- Build and maintain a positive working relationship with the organization's Audit and Finance Committee Chair and external auditors, with increasing ownership of committee materials, reporting, and inquiries over time
Budgeting, Forecasting and Financial Analysis
- Own the annual planning cycle, forecasting, month-end close, and management reporting, with a mandate to modernize tools and simplify processes
- Provide leadership in the formulation of annual business plans, operating budgets, and capital expenditure planning aligned with the organization's strategic objectives, for review with the CFO
- Assist management in measuring performance through analysis of results against budget/forecast and identification of financial trends for action
- Identify, track, analyze, and report key financial and operational drivers of performance
- Own the calculations, planning, and administration of the organization's short and long-term incentive plans (STIP/LTIP), including annual target setting
Taxation, Cash Management and Legal
- Stay abreast of regulatory changes to ensure compliance for all tax and financial matters, including timely filing of corporate tax returns, PST, GST, and other required filings
- Provide guidance and support on banking and cash management, including cash flow projections and investment of surplus funds
- Support review of legal and contractual obligations, including customer service agreements, licenses, and leases, engaging third-party legal advisors as required
Required Qualifications
- University degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Approximately 8-10+ years of progressive accounting and financial leadership experience, ideally including several years operating at a senior, strategic level (e.g., Senior Director or an early-career VP)
- Professional accounting designation preferred (CPA/CA); a background in public accounting is an asset but not required
- Solid knowledge of Canadian financial accounting standards,
statutory reporting, compliance, and taxation requirements
- Demonstrated ability to modernize financial systems and processes, with a track record of driving automation and efficiency
- Tech-savvy and proficient with accounting/management reporting software and Microsoft applications (strong Excel skills expected)
- Comfortable operating in a smaller organization where the role occasionally requires hands-on execution (e.g., building a model or spreadsheet personally), in addition to leading through others
- Direct, straightforward communicator - comfortable raising issues plainly along with proposed solutions, with minimal politics
- Exceptional relationship manager who earns trust quickly across all levels of the organization, including the CFO, fellow Senior Leadership Team members, and the Board/Audit Committee
The following experience/skills would be considered strong assets:
- Public accounting background
- Prior experience presenting to a Board or Audit Committee
- Experience with financial systems modernization or automation initiatives
- MBA
