Band Representative (Sudbury Area or Southern Ontario)

Salary Range: $35.00-$45.00/hr (dependent on experience)

JOB SUMMARY:

Sagamok Anishnawbek is seeking a Band Representative to join the Child and Family Advocacy Unit. In this meaningful role, you will advocate on behalf of Sagamok Anishnawbek children and families in child welfare matters, work alongside families to strengthen plans of care, and help ensure that children maintain connection to their culture, family, and community.

Working with families, child welfare authorities, legal partners, community services, and Chief and Council, you will help protect the best interests of Sagamok Anishnawbek children while supporting families with respect, compassion, and culturally grounded advocacy.

POSITION DUTIES:

- Advocate for Sagamok Anishnawbek children and families in child welfare matters, including matters before the courts
- Help ensure families understand their rights and remain informed about developments in their case
- Work with families to develop plans of care and connect them with culturally appropriate supports and services
- Advocate for family, community, customary care, and kinship options that preserve children's cultural and community connections
- Participate in court, case conferences, Alternative Dispute Resolution processes, Circles of Care, and family conferences as required
- Liaise with child welfare agencies, legal representatives, community service providers, and other partners
- Maintain accurate case documentation, meeting records, and activity reports
- Provide updates and information to leadership and Chief and Council as required
- Contribute to Sagamok Anishnawbek's Koognaasewin work and evolving approaches to child and family wellbeing

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:





- Ability to travel on short notice and participate in an on-call rotation
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends when required
- Ability to provide in-home, client-facing support
- Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check prior to employment and annually thereafter
- CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain
- Valid driver's licence and vehicle for on-the-job use
- Commitment to confidentiality and respectful participation in cultural activities and ceremonies

QUALIFICATIONS:

- A university degree in a human services program is preferred; candidates with a diploma in Human Services, Paralegal, or a related field and significant relevant experience will also be considered
- A minimum of two years of experience in child welfare and/or a related enforcement service
- Experience with legal services, family law, court services, and/or private legal service
- Knowledge of customary care, child protection standards, applicable legislation, regulations, guidelines, and policy directives
- Knowledge and respect for Anishnawbek history, practices, teachings, language, values, and beliefs
- Robust advocacy, communication, relationship-building, negotiation, and de-escalation skills
- The ability to work respectfully with families and manage sensitive and confidential information
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet, and email
- The ability to understand and speak Ojibwe is considered a definite asset
