NATURE AND SCOPE

The Counsellorfunctions as a member of the multi-disciplinary care team to provide servicesthat promote wellness while empowering individuals to achieve their highestlevel of functioning. In delivering these services, the Counsellorutilizes a case management approach, consulting with their clinical team andother supporting agencies. The Counsellor is required to provide coordinationin the areas of case management, case planning, and implementation ofprogramming. The Counsellor provides support to program offerings including(but not limited to): Detox, Residential, and Continuing Care Programs.

TheCounsellors main job is to assist clients along the continuum of care fromadmission to Continuing Care. Counsellors at Thorpe provide one-on-onetherapy and group processes that contribute insightful, practical andmeaningful information to the development of treatment plans. Every counsellorpossesses the ability to offer trauma informed care and culturally responsivecounselling.

EachCounsellor carries a caseload and provides clinical treatment in the form of,but not limited to, individual, family and group counselling daily. As a memberof the treatment team, the Counsellor meets regularly in collaborative fashionwith the rest of the team to discuss their client’s progress. Thecounsellor works in conjunction with an interdisciplinary team to develop a holistic treatment process and plan.

ACounsellor must possess foundational knowledge of concurrentdisorders, process addiction and a thorough understandingof substance use disorder and Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care.

RESPONSIBILITIESAND DUTIES

- Meet with clients within24 hours of counsellor assignment to establish therapeutic rapport.
- Complete abiopsychosocial assessment within one week of being medically cleared.
- Develop and adaptindividualized treatment plans based on client assessments, presenting issues,and unique needs.
- Utilize aninterdisciplinary approach and explore all available resources to maximize theeffectiveness of client care.
- Provide a range ofcounselling and education services, including individual, group, and familytherapy.
- Deliver relapseprevention, education, and ongoing support to clients.




- Maintain regular contactwith clients and families to support engagement, monitor progress, and addressconcerns.
- Assist with referrals,interventions, and coordination of case management, case planning, and programimplementation.
- Support clients in thedevelopment of problem-solving, coping, and conflict resolution skills.
- Address addictivebehaviours, concurrent disorders, trauma, grief, and other behavioural ormental health concerns.
- Assess suicidality andrisk of harm to self or others.
- Maintain accuraterecords, case-notes, and client-related documentation according to acceptedpractices and policies.
- Advocate for clients andintervene in crisis or emergency situations.
- Assist with planning andimplementation of TRC program enhancements.
- Provide ongoingevaluation and revision of client progress and treatment goals.
- Deliver services in aculturally sensitive and inclusive manner.
- Provide guidance,mentorship, and supervision to practicum students or junior staff asappropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS,EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

- ABachelor’s degree (or working towards a Bachelor’s degree) or master’s degreein psychology, Counselling or Social Work; one to three years’ experience inAddictionCounselling is an asset. Adiploma in Addiction Counselling may be considered, depending on the individualcandidate’s skills and other competencies.
- Registered (or working towards registration) in a regulated mentalhealth/addiction profession is an asset.
- Certification(or working towards certification) in MI, CBT and DBT .
- Soundknowledge of various therapeutic addiction counselling theories andpractices.
- Abilityto deal effectively and tactfully with a wide range of individuals consistingof diverse ages and cultures, in potentially volatile and emotionally chargedsituations.
- Abilityto work well under pressure,



individually and as part of ateam.
- Effectivewritten and verbal communicationskills.
- Demonstratedability to assist clients and family members with empathy, respectingtheirconfidentiality and privacy in a respectfulmanner.
- Strongmoral and ethical reasoning, along with a commitment toprivacy.
- Highdegree of resourcefulness, flexibility andadaptability.
- Mustprovide a valid driver’s license and a current driver’s abstract upon hire.
- Willbe required to obtain a Criminal record Check with Vulnerable sector check uponhiring and every 2 years of employment.
- All employees are required tocomplete Naloxone training, along with other mandatory trainings, within theirfirst three months of employment
