Competition #48817Position: Occupational Health & Safety OfficerJob OverviewThe Occupational Health and Safety Officer will be independently responsible for assessing the effective implementation of the Internal Responsibility System within all workplaces (industrial, construction, institutional, forestry, fishery, mining, etc.) in an assigned district.They will provide information, advice and guidance to employers, contractors, employees, unions, equipment suppliers, and professionals with respect to their duties and responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, assisting Labour and Management to promote a high standard of safety.Directly reports to the Regional Director.Primary AccountabilitiesConduct workplace inspections and complaint investigations as well as investigations of accidents, incidents, and allegations of reprisal as assigned by the Regional Director.Ensure compliance by issuing orders and initiating prosecution action.Qualifications and ExperienceHigh school diploma; related trade or technical training in Occupational Health & Safety, with 7 years of related experience after completion of the course.Ability to work independently and as part of a team; exhibit collaborative behaviors.Professional discretion, manage competing interests, maintain stakeholder relationships.Experience dealing with difficult clients.Interpret legislation in plain language for clients.Effective communication in one‑on‑one and larger group settings.Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).Reliable motor vehicle and valid driver’s license.Successful background and criminal record check.Preferred: Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), P. Eng designation,



or equivalent.Assessment tools may include written exams, standardized tests, oral presentations, interviews, and reference checks.Equivalency2‑year diploma in a related area with 6 years experience.4‑year bachelor’s degree in a related area with 4 years experience.Union & Bargaining UnitUnion Status: NSGEU – NSPG. This is a Bargaining Unit Position, initially restricted to current Civil Service Employees represented by the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union.
