Budget Officer – Learning Services *Temporary*

Key Responsibilities

Managing the various Learning Services budgets including exercising spending control and monitoring the availability of funds in collaboration with the Director of Finance and Directors of Learning Services

Providing, monitoring and ensuring accuracy of the day-to-day financial information of the Learning Services department

Providing regular financial updates, recommendations and forecasts as appropriate and required

Implementing best financial practices and business improvements and maintaining internal financial controls in accordance with Public Sector Accounting Standards and Ministry of Education Financial regulations.

Collaborating with Financial Services with respect to school allocations, capital transactions and year-end work





Preparing internal and external financial performance report for information purposes or for grants, targeted funds and Ministry reporting requirements

Collaboration with and support of appropriate Learning Services staff with respect to matters that impact the department and/or district finances

Qualifications

Chartered Professional Accountant designation (CPA)

Ten years of related progressive experience in accounting and finance and with supervisory experience, preferably in a unionized setting

Demonstrated expertise in finance, accounting, financial planning and forecasting with solid business acumen

Extensive knowledge and experience with all aspects of computerized financial systems and advanced knowledge of Excel

Proven ability to prioritize and meet deadlines

Demonstrated project management and problem-solving skills

Knowledge of and experience in the K-12 public education sector and knowledge of public sector accounting standards (PSAS) would be considered an asset.

Maintains confidentiality and acts with integrity in all financial matters. Adheres to regulatory and policy requirements.

Delivers accurate work under tight deadlines. Identifies opportunities for efficiency and continuous improvement.

Understands how financial decisions impact the broader education system, including staffing, student programs, and community services.

Adaptability

Responds effectively to changes in funding, policy or priorities within the dynamic K-12 education environment.

Working Conditions

Office-based with occasional school site visits.

May be required to attend evening board meetings or committee meetings.

Extended hours during budget season or year-end.

Compensation & Benefits

Competitive annual salary range: $83,339 – $104,173 based on qualifications and experience.
