Service & Specialty Door Technician

Thermo Design Insulation (TDI) Ltd. is a specialty trade contractor whose core business is the supply, installation, service, repair, and renovation of insulated metal panel systems and specialty door systems for commercial and industrial applications.

Our work is primarily within cooler and freezer enclosures, cold storage warehouses, refrigerated distribution facilities, grocery facilities, food processing plants, and other temperature-controlled environments throughout the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley.

TDI is seeking a full-time Service & Specialty Door Technician to join our Service and Renovations Department.

Specialty Door Experience

A major component of this position is the installation, service, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of specialty cold-storage and high-speed door systems.

Rytec Doors are the primary high-speed/specialty door brand that TDI works with. Previous experience installing, servicing, troubleshooting, or repairing Rytec door systems would be a significant asset and is strongly preferred.

TDI regularly works with door systems manufactured by:

- Rytec Doors
- Global / Global Cold Storage Doors
- Rite-Hite Doors
- Other manufacturers of specialty cooler, freezer, high-speed, sliding, and cold-storage door systems

Candidates with direct experience working with Rytec high-speed doors, controllers, operators, safety systems, wireless systems, photo eyes, activation devices, and associated electrical/mechanical components are encouraged to apply.

Experience with Rytec systems is preferred; however, candidates with strong mechanical, electrical, automatic-door, overhead-door, industrial-maintenance, or similar experience who demonstrate the ability to learn specialty door systems will also be considered.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will be involved in the installation, service, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of industrial and cold-storage doors.

A working knowledge of the mechanical and hardware components of the following types of doors is beneficial:

- Hollow-core and insulated-core metal doors
- Hinged cooler and freezer doors
- Overhead sectional doors, both manual and power operated
- Horizontal and vertical sliding cooler/freezer doors
- Bi-parting cold-storage doors
- Power-operated high-speed and rapid-roll doors
- Traffic doors
- Specialty cold-storage door systems

The position will also involve:

- Troubleshooting mechanical and electrical door problems
- Diagnosing automatic door and operator faults
- Working with computerized door controllers and control systems
- Working with switches, motors, relays, sensors, photo eyes, wireless devices, safety edges,



activation devices, and automatic operators
- Reading and interpreting electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
- Working with electrical components, wiring, circuits, junction boxes, switches, and control devices
- Installing and adjusting door hardware, operators, tracks, rollers, seals, gasketing, and related components
- Performing preventative maintenance and service inspections
- Identifying damaged or worn components and recommending repairs
- General construction and renovation work involving insulated metal panel walls and ceilings
- Installation and repair of insulated metal panel systems
- Finishing work using caulking and other sealants
- Installation of sheet-metal trim, flashings, fasteners, door trims, and gasketing
- Using hand tools and power tools
- Operating forklifts, scissor lifts, and boom lifts where required

The successful candidate must be physically capable of performing both heavy and light lifting, including insulated metal panels, door leaves, operators, frames, tracks, motors, and other large door components.

Candidate Requirements

In addition to the ability to perform the work required, the successful candidate must possess:

- Valid BC driver's licence
- Reliable transportation
- Ability to read and write in English
- Basic mathematical skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, area calculations, lineal footage, and material quantities
- Ability to accurately use a standard tape measure and laser measuring device
- Ability to read and interpret assembly instructions, specifications, blueprints, drawings, schematics, and construction details
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Basic electrical knowledge and an ability to troubleshoot electrical components
- Good problem-solving and diagnostic skills
- Ability to work independently without direct supervision
- Self-motivation and good organizational skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively with fellow employees, customers, site supervisors, electricians, and other trades
- Keen attention to detail and strong observational skills
- Excellent finishing skills involving sealants, caulking, door trims, sheet-metal flashings, gasketing, and fasteners
- Ability and willingness to learn new door systems, controllers, equipment, and installation procedures

Preferred Experience





The following experience would be considered a significant asset:

- Rytec Door installation, service, or troubleshooting experience
- Experience with Global Doors
- Experience with Rite-Hite Doors
- High-speed door service experience
- Industrial or commercial automatic-door experience
- Overhead-door service experience
- Industrial electrical troubleshooting experience
- Cold-storage door installation or service
- Cooler and freezer construction
- Food-processing or refrigerated warehouse construction
- Insulated metal panel installation
- Industrial maintenance or service-technician experience

Previous cold-storage and food-plant construction experience would be beneficial but is not mandatory. Training will be provided.

Previous experience working with insulated metal panel systems and related products would also be beneficial but is not mandatory. This position will include insulated metal panel installation, and training will be provided as required.

Training & Certifications

Previous training or certification in the following areas would be beneficial but is not mandatory:

- Forklift operation
- Scissor lift operation
- Boom lift operation
- Fall protection
- WHMIS
- Construction and industrial safety

Required equipment and safety training can be provided by TDI.

Compensation

Hourly wage: $28.00–$40.00 per hour

Compensation is negotiable based on experience, particularly for candidates with previous Rytec, specialty-door, automatic-door, industrial electrical, or cold-storage experience.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a mechanically inclined service technician who enjoys troubleshooting and repairing equipment rather than performing repetitive construction work.

Someone with previous Rytec Door experience would be particularly well suited to this position, as Rytec systems represent a significant portion of the specialty high-speed door equipment serviced and installed by TDI.
