Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Director of Continuous Improvement, while demonstrating commitment to quality, efficiency, continuous improvement and standardization of processes, the Weld Fixture Specialist is a key member of the continuous improvement team. The Weld Jig & Fixture Expert is responsible for the design, development, validation, and continuous improvement of welding jigs, fixtures, and tooling used to manufacture welded assemblies. This role ensures fixtures provide accurate part location, repeatable clamping, proper weld access, and efficient production while meeting quality, safety, and dimensional requirements.

The ideal candidate has strong hands-on knowledge of welding processes, GD&T;, fixture design, fabrication, and manufacturing engineering, with the ability to troubleshoot production issues and work closely with welders, engineers, quality personnel, and tooling suppliers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Design and develop welding jigs, fixtures, clamps, locators, and poka-yoke devices

· Interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, GD&T;, and product specifications

· Establish appropriate datums, locating points, clamping strategies, and part sequencing

· Ensure fixtures provide dimensional accuracy, repeatability, weld accessibility, and operator ergonomics

· Develop fixtures for MIG/MAG, TIG, robotic welding, and other applicable welding processes

· Troubleshoot dimensional variation, weld distortion, part movement, and fixture-related production problems

· Work with welders and production teams to identify and resolve tooling issues

· Coordinate fixture fabrication, installation, tryout, and commissioning

· Conduct fixture validation and prove-out using first-off/tryout parts

· Develop and maintain fixture drawings, 3D models, BOMs, and tooling documentation

· Identify opportunities to reduce setup time, improve cycle time, and increase fixture reliability

· Recommend automation, robotic welding, hydraulic/pneumatic clamping, sensors, and other tooling improvements where appropriate





· Support root-cause analysis for dimensional and welding defects

· Work with Quality Engineering to establish inspection and verification requirements

· Modify and improve existing fixtures based on production feedback and quality data

· Ensure tooling complies with applicable safety requirements

· Support preventive maintenance and establish fixture inspection criteria

· Train production and maintenance personnel on proper fixture operation and care

Qualifications:

· 5+ years of experience in welding fixture, jig, tooling, or manufacturing engineering

· Strong practical knowledge of welded fabrication and welding processes

· Experience designing or building welding fixtures and tooling

· Strong understanding of GD&T;, datums, tolerancing, and dimensional control

· Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and weld symbols

· Experience with fixture troubleshooting and weld distortion control

· Knowledge of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement principles

· Solid mechanical problem-solving and hands-on fabrication skills

· Ability to work effectively with engineering, production, quality, and maintenance team

Technical Skills:

Experience with some or all of the following:

· 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX, Creo, or Inventor

· Fixture and tooling design

· GD&T; and dimensional inspection

· MIG and TIG welding

· Modular tooling

· Poka-yoke/error-proofing

· Weld distortion and dimensional control

· CMM/laser measurement systems

· Welding robots and automation

· Fixture simulation and weld accessibility analysis

· CNC machining and fixture fabrication

· PFMEA and control plans





· Lean manufacturing / Kaizen

Preferred Qualifications:

· Background in Tool & Die & machining

· CWB or equivalent welding qualification/certification

· Experience with APQP, PPAP, PFMEA, and control plans
