Role Responsibilities As an Investigator with the CIU, you will play a vital role in supporting consumer protection by conducting investigations, enforcing consumer protection legislation, and addressing complaints related to theft, fraud, forgery, and other delegated offences. You will handle lower-complexity cases while developing the knowledge and skills required to take on more advanced responsibilities.

You’ll work closely with law enforcement agencies, Crown Prosecutors, and stakeholders to ensure consistent enforcement of legislation and promote public confidence in the marketplace.

Your key responsibilities include

Investigating and Enforcing Compliance

Gathering, securing, and preserving evidence.

Interviewing complainants, witnesses, and respondents.

Researching legislation and participating in drafting/executing search warrants and production orders.

Recommending enforcement actions such as warnings, violation tickets, or court orders.

Preparing court documents, serving summonses, and subpoenaing witnesses.

Acting as a Crown witness and assisting with court appearances.

Liaising with law enforcement agencies and Crown Prosecutors.





Explaining consumer protection legislation to the public and business community.

Responding to inquiries and promoting awareness of rights, remedies, and responsibilities.

Participating in team investigations and legislative review projects.

Providing feedback and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications University degree in Criminology, Law enforcement, Investigations or a related field, in addition to:

Basic knowledge of consumer protection legislation and investigative processes.

Demonstrated ability to gather and analyze evidence.

Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to professionalism.

Willingness to obtain Peace Officer status and adhere to departmental policies.

The following will be considered Assets :

Experience conducting investigations or working in enforcement-related roles.

Familiarity with the Criminal Code, Alberta Evidence Act, and other related legislation.

University graduation in a related field; no experience required; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalencies may be considered on the basis of one year of education for one year of experience, or one year of experience for one year of education.

One (1) full-time permanent position available. 36.25 hours of work per week

Location: Commerce Place Building, 10155-102 ST Edmonton.

Final candidates will be required to undergo a criminal records check (CRC). Note - Candidates selected to advance to the next stage of the recruitment.
