Oxford House pre-treatment housing is a specialized, short-term residential program designed to support individuals during one of the most vulnerable phases of early recovery: the waiting period between completing medical detoxification and entering a formal, inpatient addiction treatment facility.
By providing immediate, structured accommodation, the program eliminates the dangerous "gap" where individuals frequently experience relapse due to a lack of stability and high stress.
Program Structure and Core Mechanics
- Target Timeline: Stays typically last between 4 to 6 weeks, directly matching the standard length of residential treatment waitlists.
- Substance-Free Environment: Homes maintain strict drug- and alcohol-free policies. This provides a safe haven away from high-risk environments and social circles.
- Holistic Readiness: Daily routines focus on stabilizing a resident's physical and mental health. This preparation allows them to fully engage in their upcoming clinical programming from day one.
- Clinical & Community Integration
- Professional and Lived-Experience Oversight: While peer-driven, the homes are supported by house leads and professionals who often have lived experience. They provide guidance, mentorship, and emergency intervention if needed.
- Mandatory Recovery Programming: Residents are required to actively participate in community recovery resources, typically attending a minimum of 5 recovery meetings per week.
- Medication-Assisted Support: The program safely accommodates individuals who are initiating or maintaining Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT), acknowledging the medical realities of modern opioid recovery.
- Financial Accessibility: These accredited beds are fully subsidized by provincial funding. This means qualifying individuals face no out-of-pocket user fees.
