TAX REVIEWER/SIGNER – CROSS-BORDER / GLOBAL MOBILITY TAX
Client: Leading Global Tax & Consulting Firm
Contract: 3–4 months (Seasonal), with peak volume concentrated in March and April
Start Date: February 8, 2027
End Date: May 8, 2027 (potential for short extension)
Location: Fully Remote – candidates located anywhere in Canada; exceptional US-based candidates may also be considered if they have significant Canadian/US cross-border tax and consulting experience
Time Zone: Candidates will work with a regional team within their own time zone
OUR CLIENT
Our client is a leading global tax and consulting firm specializing in the complex tax implications associated with a globally mobile workforce. Their highly specialized team supports organizations and their employees with personal tax matters arising from international assignments, cross-border moves, remote work arrangements, and other forms of employee mobility.
The majority of the work involves Canadian personal income tax returns , with a smaller subset requiring the preparation and review of related US personal tax filings .
Due to significant seasonal volume, our client is seeking experienced Tax Reviewers/Signers who can independently review a high volume of personal tax returns while applying strong technical judgment to complex Canadian/US cross-border and global mobility situations.
THE ROLE
This is a senior/manager level tax review and signing role , with some openness for strong reviewers who are not signers as well. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in the personal tax, cross-border tax (US/Canadian cross-border taxation), and/or global mobility tax realm , ideally gained within a professional tax or consulting workplace. Big 4 experience is highly valued but is not a requirement for the right candidate.
The successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing (or reviewing and signing) personal tax returns prepared by other tax professionals within the team, identifying technical issues or inconsistencies, determining appropriate tax treatment, and ensuring returns are accurate, complete, and compliant before submission.
We are looking for someone who can step into the review process with limited supervision , quickly assess the technical quality of a return,
resolve issues with preparers, and exercise sound professional judgment across a broad range of Canadian and US cross-border tax scenarios.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Independently review and sign Canadian personal income tax returns, including returns involving complex cross-border and global mobility considerations.
- Review a smaller population of related US personal tax filings and identify issues requiring correction, clarification, or escalation.
- Assess whether tax positions, calculations, supporting documentation, and disclosures are technically appropriate.
- Identify inconsistencies, missing information, technical errors, and potential areas of tax exposure during the review process.
- Apply professional judgment to complex or unusual tax situations rather than relying solely on standardized processes.
- Work closely with tax preparers to explain required changes and ensure issues are appropriately resolved before filing.
- Handle a high volume of returns during peak season while maintaining strong technical accuracy and attention to detail.
- Escalate genuinely complex or unusual technical matters appropriately while independently resolving issues within your area of expertise.
- Communicate clearly with internal teams and, where required, client-facing stakeholders regarding tax matters and required information.
- Work effectively within a technology-driven tax preparation and review environment, leveraging tax software and digital workflow tools throughout the process.
- Maintain a high standard of professional judgment, confidentiality, quality control, and documentation.
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
- Significant professional experience in Canadian personal income tax , with solid knowledge of Canadian individual tax compliance.
- Robust experience with US/Canadian cross-border personal taxation and/or global mobility tax is highly preferred.
- Experience reviewing personal tax returns at a Senior, Manager, Senior Manager, or equivalent level , with the ability to independently assess and approve/sign returns.
- Demonstrated experience handling complex individual tax situations , particularly those involving international assignments, cross-border income, residency considerations, foreign reporting, or globally mobile employees.
- Experience within a professional tax, accounting, or consulting environment is strongly preferred. Big 4 experience is an asset, particularly within a Global Mobility/Expatriate Tax practice, but candidates from other established tax firms or relevant professional environments will be considered.
- Demonstrated ability to review the work of other tax professionals and provide technically sound review comments and direction .
- Strong technical judgment and the ability to recognize when an issue requires further investigation or escalation.
- Comfortable working independently and taking ownership of a significant volume of work with limited day-to-day supervision.
- Ability to balance speed, volume, and technical quality , particularly during March and April peak periods.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly explain technical tax issues to preparers and stakeholders.
- Strong aptitude for technology and the ability to quickly learn and navigate new tax software and digital workflow systems.
- Experience with specific tax software is not required . The US tax environment currently uses CCH Axcess Tax .
- Strong attention to detail and a high degree of professional accountability given the review/signing responsibilities.
IDEAL BACKGROUND The strongest candidates will typically have a background such as:
- Senior Manager / Manager / Senior Tax Manager within a Big 4 or other established accounting/tax firm
- Global Mobility / Expatriate Tax professional with significant individual tax review experience
- Senior tax professional with substantial Canadian and US cross-border personal tax exposure
- Experienced tax reviewer who has progressed beyond preparation into technical review, quality control, and signing responsibilities
