Systems Engineer – Naval Communications Systems

Position Overview

We are seeking a Systems Engineer to support the development and integration of advanced shipboard communications systems for the Royal Canadian Navy's patrol vessel fleet. The successful candidate will play a key role in requirements development, system design, verification, integration, and testing activities while collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams and project stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

- Define, analyze, and manage system requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
- Maintain requirements traceability and verification matrices using IBM DOORS.
- Translate operational and domain constraints into detailed system requirements, interface control documentation, and verification plans.
- Develop and maintain system models and architecture artifacts using Cameo and SysML methodologies.
- Ensure system designs comply with applicable military standards, regulatory requirements, and project specifications.
- Perform systems analysis, modeling, and performance assessments to validate design solutions.
- Support system integration activities and conduct system-level testing to verify functionality, performance, and compliance.
- Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve issues identified during integration and test phases.
- Coordinate engineering deliverables, documentation, and project activities using Confluence and JIRA.
- Prepare technical reports, engineering documentation, and project presentations.
- Collaborate with software, network, hardware, and cybersecurity teams, as well as project managers and customer stakeholders, to ensure successful project execution.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in systems engineering, preferably within defense, aerospace, telecommunications, or complex mission-critical environments.
- Robust understanding of systems engineering principles, including:

- Requirements analysis and decomposition
- System design and architecture
- Integration and verification
- Validation and testing
- Experience with DOORS.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and technical documentation skills.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities.

Assets

- Knowledge of cybersecurity frameworks and standards such as:

- NIST
- ISO 27001
- CIS Controls
- Experience with communications technologies, including:

- ISDN
- SIP
- IP Layer 2/Layer 3 networking
- PBX systems
- Unified Communications (UC/UCR)
- Land Mobile Radio (LMR), including P25 and TETRA
- 5G communications technologies
- Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)



and simulation/modeling tools.
- Prior experience supporting naval, military, defense, or secure communications programs.
- Self-motivated and detail-oriented.
- Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Comfortable working in highly regulated and mission-critical environments.
- Capable of communicating complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Ottawa, ON. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $55.00 - $65.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors. Workplace Type
