Our client, a government organization based in downtown Ottawa, is looking for a Senior Marketing Manager to lead a small marketing and communications team and strengthen the organization's digital marketing, audience engagement and demand generation capabilities.
This is an opportunity for a seasoned marketing leader who enjoys operating at both the strategic and hands-on level. You'll help establish marketing priorities, translateorganizational objectives into actionable plans, lead campaigns, manage resources and vendors, and use performance data to continuously improve results.
The environment is fast-moving and highly team-oriented. The successful candidate will be comfortable leading a lean team while remaining close to the work rather than exclusively setting strategy and delegating execution.
What You'll Do
Marketing Strategy & Execution
- Translate organizational priorities and business objectives into actionable annual marketing plans
- Establish marketing objectives, work plans, budgets and performance measures
- Determine the right combination of channels and tactics to achieve awareness and audience-engagement objectives
- Lead the development and execution of integrated digital marketing campaigns
- Identify new approaches to reaching and engaging priority audiences
- Balance strategic planning with hands-on oversight of campaign execution
- Evaluate results and use performance insights to continuously improve marketing activity
Digital Marketing & Audience Growth
Lead and optimize marketing activity across channels including:
- LinkedIn
- YouTube
- Corporate website
- Paid digital media
- Organic social media
- Content marketing
- Email/CRM
- Events and event marketing
- Select print and marketing collateral
A key priority will be strengthening digital audience development, including finding new ways to attract qualified audiences, drive website engagement and convert previously unknown prospects into identifiable contacts and inquiries.
You'll also help expand the organization's use of LinkedIn through native content, paid and organic programs, events and executive thought leadership.
Campaign Performance & Optimization
- Establish meaningful campaign KPIs and reporting
- Monitor audience acquisition, website engagement, inquiries and conversion activity
- Evaluate campaign performance and recommend improvements
- Test new approaches to audience acquisition and engagement
- Develop compelling content and offers that encourage target audiences to engage
- Create a stronger cycle of content development, campaign activation, measurement and optimization
- Translate marketing performance into clear insights for senior leadership
Team Leadership
You'll lead a lean, multidisciplinary team of two professionals whose responsibilities span digital marketing, website management, social media, content, brand and corporate communications.
You'll be responsible for:
- Setting priorities and providing transparent direction
- Improving team productivity and marketing output
- Coaching and developing team members
- Creating stronger processes and accountability
- Balancing competing priorities and stakeholder requests
- Identifying resource and capability gaps
- Building business cases for additional internal or external resources when required
This is a hands-on leadership role. The successful candidate should enjoy rolling up their sleeves and contributing directly when needed.
Business Planning & Budget Management
You'll take ownership of the marketing component of annual business planning, including:
- Translating organizational objectives into marketing priorities
- Developing annual work plans
- Establishing objectives and expected outcomes
- Selecting appropriate marketing tactics
- Determining resource requirements
- Developing and managing budgets
- Measuring and reporting results
You'll manage a meaningful annual marketing budget and may have opportunities to develop business cases for incremental investment.
Agency & Vendor Management
- Manage relationships with external agencies and specialized vendors
- Establish clear scopes, deliverables and performance expectations
- Determine when external expertise or capacity is required
- Evaluate vendor performance
- Ensure external resources align with organizational priorities and budgets
Executive & Stakeholder Engagement
You'll work closely with senior executives and cross-functional stakeholders to understand business priorities and translate them into effective marketing programs.
You'll need the confidence and executive presence to:
- Advise senior leaders on marketing strategy and tactics
- Evaluate and respond to marketing ideas from senior stakeholders
- Present recommendations and business cases
- Communicate annual marketing direction
- Report on campaign performance and results
- Present to senior leadership and, when required, Board-level audiences
What We're Looking For
We're looking for a marketing leader who combines strategic thinking, digital expertise and strong execution skills.
You bring:
- Significant progressive marketing experience, including experience leading people
- Strong hands-on digital marketing and demand-generation expertise
- Experience leading a small or lean marketing team
- Demonstrated success generating inquiries, leads or measurable audience engagement
- Strong understanding of complex B2B or multi-stakeholder customer journeys
- Experience developing annual marketing plans and managing meaningful budgets
- Strong campaign measurement, reporting and optimization capabilities
- Experience with LinkedIn and other digital/social channels
- Website and content marketing experience
- Experience working with CRM and marketing automation platforms; HubSpot experience is an asset
- Experience managing agencies, vendors and external partners
- Strong senior stakeholder management skills
- Ability to develop and present business cases for marketing investment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Confidence presenting recommendations and results to senior leadership
- A collaborative, empathetic and relationship-oriented leadership style
- The ability to move comfortably between strategy and execution
You'll join a purpose-driven organization whose work has broad economic and public impact. This is an opportunity to have considerably more influence than might be possible in a larger, highly layered marketing organization.
