Senior Construction Accountant – Job Costing & Full-Cycle Accounting
Construction accounting experience is required.
Duggal Professional Corporation is assisting an established construction company with the recruitment of an experienced Senior Construction Accountant.
We are looking for a strong, hands-on accounting professional with direct construction industry experience who understands job costing, WIP, payroll, cash flow, month-end reporting and year-end preparation.
This is not a junior accounting or bookkeeping position. The successful candidate must be capable of taking ownership of the accounting records, reviewing the accuracy of financial information, identifying issues, and working directly with management and operations.
What We Are Looking For
The successful candidate will have significant experience working within a construction company and be comfortable managing accounting from day-to-day transactions through month-end and year-end preparation.
You should have practical experience with:
- Construction job costing and project profitability
- Work-in-progress (WIP) reporting
- Full-cycle accounting
- Month-end and year-end close
- Payroll and payroll compliance
- Cash-flow management
- Accounts payable and accounts receivable
- General ledger review and reconciliations
- GST, source deductions and WCB
- Intercompany accounting
- Financial statement preparation and review
- Year-end working papers and external accountant support
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and review full-cycle accounting, including AP, AR, bank and credit card reconciliations, journal entries and general ledger accounts.
- Maintain and review detailed construction job costing, including labour, materials, subcontractors,
equipment, change orders and cost allocations.
- Prepare and review WIP reports, project profitability and job-cost-to-complete information.
- Work with project managers and operations staff to ensure costs, billings, purchase orders and project information are accurate.
- Process or review payroll, including time entry, deductions, vacation pay, ROEs and year-end payroll reporting.
- Monitor cash flow, AR collections, AP requirements and vendor balances.
- Prepare GST returns, source deduction remittances, WCB filings and other required reporting.
- Assist with monthly financial statements and management reporting.
- Complete month-end and year-end reconciliations, schedules and working papers.
- Coordinate with the company's external accountant during year-end.
- Maintain and reconcile intercompany accounts.
- Identify accounting issues and follow through until they are resolved.
- Improve accounting controls, procedures, reporting and documentation.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
- Direct construction accounting experience is mandatory.
- Robust experience with job costing and WIP accounting.
- Strong full-cycle accounting experience.
- Experience completing month-end and year-end reconciliations and working papers.
- Canadian accounting experience.
- Solid understanding of accrual accounting and financial statements.
- Strong Excel skills.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of responsibilities.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate effectively with operations, management, vendors and external accountants.
Experience with Sage, QuickBooks, Plexxis or other construction ERP/accounting systems is considered an asset.
A CPA designation or progress toward a CPA designation is an asset but is not required. Practical construction accounting experience is more important.
Who Will Succeed in This Role
This position is well suited to an experienced construction accountant who enjoys being involved in the business rather than simply processing transactions.
You should be comfortable looking beyond the numbers, asking questions when something does not look right, working with operations to correct job-costing issues, and ensuring management has accurate and current financial information.
We are looking for someone who is dependable, experienced, practical and accountable and who wants to become an important part of a growing construction organization.
Compensation
Competitive compensation will be based on experience and qualifications.
