We are looking for an experienced Lead Hand Carpenter who combines strong carpentry skills with the ability to guide and support a construction crew. This is a hands-on position for someone who leads by example, takes pride in quality workmanship and is enthusiastic about teaching and developing apprentice carpenters.

JOB SUMMARY

The Lead Hand Carpenter works closely with the Site Superintendent to coordinate daily construction activities and support the performance of the site team.

This position includes hands-on carpentry work, directing employees, teaching apprentice carpenters, coordinating daily priorities, monitoring workmanship and helping ensure work is completed safely and according to the project drawings, specifications and schedule.

The successful candidate will be a skilled carpenter, a patient mentor, a dependable team leader and a practical problem-solver who can keep work moving while maintaining Velocity’s standards. They must be comfortable using technology and willing to consistently use Buildertrend - Construction Management software as part of their daily responsibilities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Perform skilled carpentry work throughout all stages of construction
- Lead employees and apprentices in completing assigned work
- Teach apprentice carpenters proper construction methods, tool use, safety practices and quality standards
- Provide practical instruction, constructive feedback and ongoing mentorship to apprentices and less-experienced employees
- Review daily priorities with the Site Superintendent and communicate them to the crew
- Help organize labour, tools, materials and equipment for upcoming work
- Read and interpret drawings, specifications and construction details
- Lay out work accurately and confirm measurements before construction begins




- Assign tasks based on employee skills, training needs and project requirements
- Monitor workmanship and ensure work is completed correctly and efficiently
- Identify site issues and communicate them promptly to the Site Superintendent
- Coordinate with subcontractors when directed
- Assist with material take-offs and identify material requirements in advance
- Help maintain an accurate and efficient construction schedule
- Ensure tools and equipment are used properly and maintained in good condition
- Maintain a clean, organized and professional job site
- Follow and reinforce company safety procedures and WorkSafeBC requirements
- Assist with quality-control inspections and deficiency completion
- Represent Velocity professionally when communicating with clients, trades and project partners
- Take responsibility for site activities when delegated by the Site Superintendent

REQUIREMENTS

- Minimum five years of carpentry or general construction experience
- Previous experience leading employees, apprentices or small construction crews
- Willingness and ability to teach, mentor and support apprentice carpenters
- Red Seal Carpentry certification is required
- Experience with high-end custom residential construction is considered an asset
- Knowledge of residential construction methods, materials and sequencing
- Knowledge of the BC Building Code and WorkSafeBC requirements
- Valid BC driver’s licence and reliable transportation
- Current First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain it
- Own basic hand tools appropriate for the position
- Ability to perform the physical requirements of an active carpentry position, including lifting, climbing, kneeling and working in varying weather conditions
