Overview
We are seeking an experienced, motivated, and reliable Sous Chef to join our culinary team on a full-time, permanent basis. The ideal candidate will have strong culinary skills, leadership experience, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced banquet and catering environment.
The Sous Chef will work closely with the Head Chef and kitchen team to ensure consistent food quality, efficient kitchen operations, proper food preparation, and smooth execution of events and catering services.
This position requires someone who is comfortable working in both indoor and outdoor catering environments, including off-site events, and who can adapt to different kitchen setups and working conditions.
A valid BC Class 5 driver's licence is mandatory, and candidates must provide a current driver's abstract.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Head Chef with the day-to-day management and operation of the kitchen
- Lead and supervise kitchen staff during food preparation, service, and events
- Prepare, cook, and oversee a variety of dishes according to established recipes and quality standards
- Ensure consistency in taste, presentation, portion sizes, and overall food quality
- Organize and coordinate food preparation for banquets, weddings, corporate events, and off-site catering
- Assist with menu preparation, production planning, and ingredient requirements
- Ensure all food is prepared and stored according to proper food safety and sanitation standards
- Monitor food quality, freshness, and proper storage throughout kitchen operations
- Ensure the kitchen is clean, organized, and properly maintained at all times
- Train, guide,
and support kitchen staff to maintain high standards of food preparation and service
- Assist with scheduling and assigning kitchen duties as required
- Monitor inventory and communicate ingredient and supply requirements to the Head Chef or management
- Minimize food waste and ensure efficient use of ingredients
- Work closely with the service and operations teams to ensure smooth event execution
- Take an active role in outdoor and off-site catering operations, including transporting food, equipment, and supplies when required
- Set up and operate temporary or mobile catering kitchens and cooking stations at outdoor events
- Maintain professional standards and food quality in different catering environments
- Assist the Head Chef with troubleshooting and resolving kitchen or service issues during events
- Ensure all kitchen staff follow company policies, food safety procedures, and workplace standards
- Perform other kitchen and catering-related duties as required
Skills & Qualifications
- Previous experience as a Sous Chef, Chef de Partie, Lead Cook, or in a similar senior culinary role
- Strong cooking skills and knowledge of a variety of cuisines and cooking techniques
- Experience in banquet, catering, restaurant, or high-volume food service operations
- Experience supervising and leading kitchen staff
- Strong knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and proper food handling procedures
- Ability to organize and prioritize food production for large events
- Ability to work efficiently and remain calm in a fast-paced setting
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to food quality
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by event schedules
- Comfortable working in outdoor catering environments and off-site locations
- Physically able to stand for extended periods and lift and move kitchen supplies and equipment as required
- Valid BC Class 5 driver's licence – mandatory
- Current driver's abstract – mandatory
- Ability and willingness to drive company vehicles for catering operations when required
- FoodSafe certification - mandatory

Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Schedule: Flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays based on catering and event requirements
Location: South Hall Banquet & Wedding Palace Ltd. and various off-site catering locations
Pay: $18.85-$23.66 per hour
