About Black Hill Dog Company

Black Hill Dog Company is a skilled dog boarding, daycare and training facility located on a beautiful 30-acre property in Prince Edward County.

We are a small, experienced team that takes the care, safety and wellbeing of every dog in our facility seriously. Our environment is active, hands-on and highly structured, and we are looking for someone who wants to become a dependable, long-term member of our team.

About the Position

This is a full-time, hands-on kennel attendant position involving approximately 50% dog handling and 50% cleaning and facility care.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who genuinely enjoys working with dogs but also understands that professional animal care involves a significant amount of cleaning, physical work and responsibility.

Your day may include:

- Safely handling and caring for dogs of many breeds, sizes, ages and personalities
- Walking and exercising dogs throughout the property
- Supervising dogs during play and enrichment activities
- Feeding and providing fresh water
- Maintaining clean, comfortable and safe kennel areas
- Picking up and disposing of dog waste throughout the day
- Deep cleaning kennels and facility areas
- Laundry and general facility maintenance
- Monitoring dogs for changes in behaviour, appetite, energy or general wellbeing
- Following established cleaning, handling, feeding and safety protocols
- Communicating with the team regarding individual dogs and daily priorities
- Helping maintain an organized, calm and safe environment for both dogs and staff

Please Understand What This Job Is Really Like

We believe in being completely transparent with applicants.

This is not a job where you spend your day playing with dogs.

Approximately half of your shift is cleaning and facility work. This includes unpleasant tasks such as feces and waste cleanup, deep cleaning and laundry.

The position is physically demanding. Employees routinely walk 10,000+ steps per day, spend much of the shift on their feet and work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.

Dogs can also be loud. Barking is a normal part of working in a kennel environment, and some days will be significantly busier and more challenging than others.

Our workload changes with occupancy. A busy day with a full facility, difficult-to-handle dogs or unexpected messes can be substantially more demanding than a quieter day.

We would rather be completely honest about the challenges of this position than have someone accept the job and discover later that it isn't what they expected.

If you read the above and think, "That sounds like work I would actually enjoy," we'd love to hear from you.

What We're Looking For

Previous professional kennel or animal-care experience is an asset, but we are willing to train the right person.

More important to us is your attitude, reliability and willingness to work.

The ideal candidate is:

- Dependable and consistently punctual
- Physically capable of an active, demanding workday
- Comfortable with cleaning, waste removal and other less glamorous aspects of animal care
- Comfortable working around barking dogs
- Calm and confident when handling dogs
- Comfortable working with dogs of different sizes, temperaments and energy levels
- Able to follow established procedures and safety protocols
- Organized and able to stay on task
- Able to work independently without constant supervision
- A good communicator and team player
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather
- Willing to step in and help when the team needs additional support
- Interested in a long-term position, rather than temporary employment

We are not looking for someone who simply loves dogs. We are looking for someone who loves working with dogs and is prepared for the reality of professional dog care.

Training & Support

You do not need to know everything on day one.

We provide hands-on training in our handling, cleaning, safety and daily care procedures. Experienced team members are available to help you develop your skills and understand our expectations.

We aim to provide a healthy work-life balance through consistent scheduling and advance planning wherever possible.

What We Offer

- $17.60–$20.00/hour, based on experience
- Full-time, permanent employment
- Paid training
- Clear expectations and established procedures
- A supportive, experienced team
- Opportunities to develop professional dog-handling and animal-care skills
- Work on a beautiful 30-acre property

- A workplace focused on safety, responsible handling and quality animal care
- Scheduling designed to provide employees with regular time off

Please submit your resume along with a brief explanation of why you are interested in professional animal care and what makes you a good fit for a physically demanding, hands-on position.
