China Market Launch & Growth Lead
Canadian Eligibility Requirement: The successful candidate must be a Canadian citizen, Canadian permanent resident, or a Canadian employee authorized by LingQ to work from China. Candidates currently residing in mainland China are encouraged to apply if they meet this requirement.
Reports to: CEO
About LingQ LingQ is a web and mobile language-learning platform that helps learners acquire languages through real content they enjoy, using lessons, import tools, reading and listening, and vocabulary tracking. LingQ is preparing to launch its service in mainland China.
The Opportunity LingQ has already established an operational relationship with a China-based partner supporting local distribution and payment processing. The next challenge is commercial: determine how to position LingQ for Chinese consumers, build awareness and demand, acquire users efficiently, convert them to paid subscribers, and establish a repeatable growth model.
We are looking for a hands-on market-entry and growth leader who has done this before. You will work directly with the CEO and local partners to develop and execute LingQ's China go-to-market strategy. This is not a traditional product-management role and there is no large local team on day one. Your initial mandate is to learn quickly, test intelligently, produce measurable results, and recommend where LingQ should invest to scale.
What You Will Own
- Develop the China market-entry and consumer go-to-market strategy, including priority customer segments, positioning, value proposition, pricing/offer considerations, launch sequencing, and channel strategy.
- Translate LingQ's global value proposition into messaging and campaigns that resonate with mainland Chinese language learners.
- Determine the most effective discovery and acquisition mix across relevant Chinese social, video, messaging, creator/KOL, community, search, and app-distribution channels.
- Design and run controlled user-acquisition experiments, using data to decide what to scale, change, or stop.
- Build creator, influencer, community, affiliate, and partnership programs where they can produce efficient customer acquisition and credible word of mouth.
- Own the consumer funnel from awareness and registration through engagement, paid conversion, retention, and referral.
- Define and report the China growth scorecard, including registrations, activation/engagement, conversion to paid, customer acquisition cost, retention, lifetime value, and channel-level performance.
- Work with LingQ's distribution/payment partner while keeping ownership of the commercial strategy, customer proposition, growth experiments, and business results.
- Identify product, onboarding, content, localization, support, and messaging changes required to improve Chinese user adoption and conversion.
- Maintain current working knowledge of the local digital ecosystem and flag regulatory, platform, content, payment, or operating issues that may affect the growth plan.
- Serve as LingQ's internal voice of the China consumer and recommend the team, agencies, partnerships, budget, and processes required as the business proves itself.
What Success Looks Like During the first 6-12 months, success means establishing evidence for whether and how LingQ can build a scalable paid consumer business in China. You will be expected to:
- Identify the highest-potential initial customer segments and a differentiated positioning for LingQ.
- Establish a practical launch plan and testable acquisition strategy rather than a broad awareness campaign.
- Generate and analyze real acquisition, engagement, conversion, retention, and unit-economics data.
- Demonstrate which channels and messages can produce qualified users and paid subscribers at economics worth scaling.
- Create a fact-based recommendation for the next stage of investment in China.
What We Are Looking For
- Fluent Mandarin and fluent English
- Firsthand experience living and/or working in mainland China and solid current knowledge of its consumer digital,
social, creator, and app ecosystems.
- Proven experience launching or materially growing a Chinese or non-Chinese B2C digital product, app, subscription service, or comparable online service for mainland Chinese consumers.
- Evidence of measurable results. You should be able to explain the target customer, acquisition channels, budget, funnel, metrics, what you personally owned, what worked, what failed, and what you changed.
- Hands-on experience with performance/growth marketing and consumer conversion funnels, not only brand strategy or agency management.
- Experience with subscription, freemium, mobile-app, consumer SaaS, digital content, education, productivity, wellness, creator, or similar recurring-revenue products is strongly preferred.
- Comfort operating with high autonomy, limited initial resources, incomplete information, and direct accountability for outcomes.
- Ability to work effectively with local partners while maintaining LingQ's commercial priorities and learning directly from market data.
A Strong Candidate Might Have Led China market entry for a local or foreign consumer app; built a localized go-to-market plan; tested channels such as WeChat, Douyin, Xiaohongshu, Bilibili, creators/KOLs or relevant communities; measured acquisition and paid conversion; and can show how those experiments changed the company's China strategy. Direct language-learning experience is useful, but proven China consumer-launch capability is more important.
Compensation Compensation is commensurate with experience, with the potential for performance-based incentives tied to the success of LingQ's China initiative.
How to Apply Send your resume and a short note to
[email protected]. We are screening for demonstrated China consumer-market execution rather than generic product-management or marketing experience.
In your note, describe one specific product or online service you helped launch or grow in mainland China. Tell us who the target consumer was, which acquisition channels you used, what you personally owned, the measurable results, and one thing that did not work and what you changed as a result.
