AML Analyst / Investigator

Location: Toronto, ON

Work Arrangement: Hybrid

Contract: 12 months, with potential extension

Target Start: Following the October 9 assessment process

T4: $30–33/hr

IC: $37–40/hr

What You'll Be Doing

- Review and investigate transaction monitoring alerts, internal referrals, and potentially suspicious activity
- Analyze customer accounts, transaction histories, supporting documentation, and information from multiple sources
- Identify unusual patterns, trends, anomalies, and potential financial crime risks
- Conduct investigations involving multiple products, services, or lines of business
- Determine appropriate next steps, including escalation and preparation of Suspicious Transaction Reports (STRs)
- Develop clear investigative rationales and conclusions supported by evidence
- Maintain accurate case files and document investigative activities throughout the case lifecycle
- Prepare investigation reports, notifications, case documentation, and required filings
- Manage an assigned investigation queue while meeting established service level objectives
- Gather and assess evidence that may support investigations, regulatory requirements, loss prevention, legal proceedings, or process improvements
- Analyze data and investigative information to identify trends and provide insights
- Prepare regular and ad hoc reports, dashboards, and analytical materials
- Identify opportunities to improve investigative processes, reporting, and operational efficiency
- Stay current with AML practices, financial crime trends, regulatory requirements, and compliance standards
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders and provide recommendations regarding financial crime risks
- Contribute to training, knowledge sharing, investigative tools, and process improvements
- Exercise sound judgment when resolving investigative issues and escalate complex or higher-risk matters appropriately

Investigation Environment The team operates across two key areas:

Transaction Monitoring Alerts

- Review and triage automated transaction monitoring alerts and internal referrals




- Perform initial analysis to determine whether activity requires further investigation
- Build foundational AML investigative experience and knowledge

Investigations / Cases

- Conduct deeper investigations into customer accounts and transaction activity
- Analyze transaction history, customer information, and supporting documentation
- Determine whether activity warrants escalation, further investigation, or preparation of an STR
- Document a clear rationale, supporting evidence, and final conclusion

Investigators manage assigned queues and are expected to meet established service levels, including a 45-day investigation timeline .

What We're Looking For

Required / Preferred:

- 1+ year of relevant experience in AML, transaction monitoring, financial crime investigations, fraud investigations, or a related area
- 3–5 years of experience preferred
- Experience within a financial institution highly preferred
- Experience with AML investigations, transaction monitoring, financial crime risk, fraud, or regulatory compliance
- International AML experience will also be considered
- Post-secondary education in business, finance, criminology, risk management, compliance, or a related field is preferred
- Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience will be considered
- Knowledge of AML and financial crime regulatory requirements
- Understanding of financial crime risks and investigative methodologies
- Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills
- Strong written and verbal communication
- Excellent attention to detail and documentation skills
- Ability to analyze complex information and identify patterns, risks, and anomalies
- Ability to manage multiple investigations and competing priorities
- Comfortable working independently while collaborating with stakeholders




- Solid judgment and relationship-building skills

Technology & Tools Experience with AML, transaction monitoring, investigation, or case management platforms is an asset.

You should be comfortable working with:

- Case management systems
- Transaction monitoring / financial crime detection tools
- Microsoft Word and Excel
- Investigation templates and documentation tools
- Data and reporting tools

Strong written documentation skills are important, as investigators are responsible for clearly documenting findings and uploading supporting evidence into case management systems.

Hybrid Work Arrangement

This position is based in Toronto with a flexible hybrid model that changes as you progress through training:

- Initial training & 100% QC period: approximately 2–3 days onsite per week
- After training / graduation from 100% QC: approximately 2 days onsite per month
- Candidates must be comfortable attending onsite training, assessments, and team activities as required

Contract & Growth Potential
- Initial 12-month contract
- Potential for extension based on business needs and performance
- Contracts may potentially extend for up to 2 years
- Permanent opportunities may become available as FTE positions arise
- Opportunity to build hands-on experience across AML, transaction monitoring, and financial crime investigations

AML Assessment Process As part of the selection process, candidates will complete an AML assessment on October 9 .

The assessment may include

- Investigation-based case studies
- Transaction analysis
- Analysis of investigative information
- Written documentation of findings
- Multiple-choice AML and financial crime questions
- Demonstration of analytical and investigative judgment

Preparation materials will be provided in advance. Candidates should be prepared to demonstrate their ability to analyze information, identify potential financial crime risks, document findings, and reach well-supported investigative conclusions . Successful candidates may be considered for current openings or added to a qualified AML talent pool for future opportunities .
