Hardlines

Hardlines Inc., Canada’s leading publisher for the hardware and building materials industry, is looking for an experienced and ambitious Editor-in-Chief to lead the editorial direction of our magazines, newsletters and digital platforms.

This is a great opportunity for an editor who loves finding the story, asking the right questions and getting to know the people behind an industry. You’ll play a central role in determining what Hardlines covers, how we cover it and how we can make our content even more valuable to our readers.

The role combines editorial leadership with hands-on journalism. You’ll develop the editorial strategy for our magazines, write and edit daily news and newsletters, assign and edit freelance stories, and pursue your own reporting and feature ideas. Just as importantly, you’ll get out from behind your computer–meeting industry leaders, attending events and conferences, and building the relationships that lead to great stories.

This is a remote position, with regular opportunities for in-person meetings, industry events and some travel.

What you’ll do

- Set the editorial vision for Hardlines’ magazines and digital content, developing a compelling mix of news, features, analysis, interviews and industry insight.
- Lead editorial planning and manage magazine and digital content calendars.
- Write and edit daily news stories, newsletters, features and other editorial content.
- Develop original story ideas that uncover important trends, challenges, opportunities and personalities across the industry.
- Assign stories to freelance writers and contributors,

providing clear direction and thoughtful editing.
- Interview retailers, manufacturers, suppliers, executives and other industry leaders.
- Build and maintain a strong network of industry sources and contacts.
- Attend conferences, trade shows and other industry events to report, network and identify new story opportunities.
- Be a visible editorial representative for Hardlines and develop solid relationships throughout the industry.
- Work closely with the Hardlines team on special projects, events and other initiatives.
- Look for new ways to grow our audience, strengthen our journalism and keep Hardlines at the forefront of the industry.

What you bring

- Five-plus years of journalism, editing or publishing experience.
- Exceptional writing, editing and reporting skills.
- A strong editorial instinct and the ability to recognize a story that matters to a professional audience.
- Experience developing editorial calendars and managing multiple projects and deadlines.
- Excellent interviewing and relationship-building skills.
- A genuine curiosity about business, retail, consumer products and the people driving these industries forward.
- The ability to work confidently with senior executives and industry experts.

- Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently while collaborating with a remote team.
- Energy, initiative and a willingness to pick up the phone, leave the ofice and go where the stories are.
- A willingness to travel periodically for meetings, conferences and industry events.
- French language speaking skills helpful but not necessary
- Experience with Constant Contact or willingness to learn
- Experience with Adobe Dreamweaver or willingness to learn
