Complexity Team Teacher Description

Classrooms across Alberta are increasingly complex, encompassing students with diverse academic, behavioural, social-emotional, and mental health needs. Through provincial funding to address classroom complexity, Fort McMurray Public Schools has established Complexity Team Lead positions to provide enhanced support and stability for students and staff in high-needs environments.

Assigned to École McTavish High School for the 2026-27 school year, this teacher will provide consistent, in-class support for students with complex learning needs. This role is not assigned to a single classroom, but instead functions as a flexible, responsive support across the school, working collaboratively with staff and, where applicable, as part of a complexity team supported by educational assistants.

This role focuses on providing immediate, real-time support to address classroom complexity.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide in class support for diverse student needs across the school
- Work alongside teachers using push-in and pull-out models
- Respond to urgent behavioural, academic, or mental health needs
- Provide real-time, responsive support in complex classroom situations
- Implement individual, small group, and whole-class interventions
- Support student regulation, engagement, and safety, including one-to-one interventions when required
- Collaborate with teachers, educational assistants, and school-based teams to problem-solve complex situations
- Support English language learners




- Use student data and school-based information to prioritize and respond to needs
- Maintain documentation and reporting at the school level
- Flex between direct student support and classroom support based on need

Desired Qualifications/Skills: The Ideal Candidate will demonstrate the following background, philosophy, and experience:

- Bachelor of Education Degree
- Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate
- Effective organization and classroom management skills
- Ability to create a learning environment where students feel safe, supported, and challenged
- Experience or familiarity with analyzing data and using data to inform decisions and/or instruction
- Relentless drive to set and achieve personal and professional goals
- Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or SMG training




- Strong collaborative team player and a positive staff member
- Experience teaching in Junior and Senior High is considered an asset
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional growth
- Possess superior organizational and interpersonal skills
- Be a reflective practitioner
- Be willing to participate/volunteer in the school community beyond the classroom
- Recognize the importance of promoting the school with parents and in the community
- Have skill in involving parents as partners (parental involvement)
- Possess an ability to create an effective team with educational assistants, parents, and multidisciplinary professionals
