Role Description

This is a contract hybrid role for a Law Student (Currently enrolled, recently graduated, or about to enter law school) located in Toronto, ON, with some flexibility for work from home. The Law Student will assist with legal research, drafting legal documents, reviewing case files, and conducting analysis to support the firm’s legal proceedings. Additional responsibilities may include assisting with correspondence, organizing casework, and working collaboratively with the legal team to support client needs.

Practice Area Breakdown

- Criminal Defence: Reviewing Crown disclosure, drafting Charter notices (Sections 8, 9, 10b), compiling bail verification plans, and preparing trial binders for criminal offenses.
- Civil Litigation: Conducting statutory and case law research via CanLII/Westlaw, drafting pleadings (Statements of Claim/Defence), preparing motion records, and drafting Factums for the Ontario Court of Justice and Superior Court of Justice.
- Real Estate Law: Assisting with transactional mechanics, reviewing Agreements of Purchase and Sale, file organization,



and gaining exposure to real estate closing processes and litigation/breach disputes.

Qualifications & Requirements

- Targeted Litigation Focus (Required): Candidates must demonstrate some exposure or experience in Criminal Defence or Civil Litigation. This can be through past legal employment, legal clinic work (e.g., Downtown Legal Services, Osgoode Legal Assistance), or focused academic coursework (Criminal Procedure, Evidence, Civil Procedure, Mock Trials/Moots).
- Education: Current enrollment in an accredited law school program (JD / LLM) or an NCA candidate seeking practical Canadian law firm experience.
- Document Preparation: Strong skills in legal document preparation and document review, including drafting, formatting, and proofreading legal forms, court motion materials, and professional correspondence.
- Legal Research: Advanced proficiency in legal and factual research, utilizing online databases (Westlaw Next, LexisNexis/Quicklaw, CanLII) to build solid case strategies and memos.
- Organization & Speed: High attention to detail, organization, and time management, with the ability to manage multiple fluid deadlines in a fast-paced litigation environment.
- Communication: Effective communication abilities, including sharp written advocacy and highly professional client and court stakeholder interaction.
- Tech Literacy: Comfort with standard office software and document management systems; prior exposure to legal practice management software (Clio, CosmoLex, ACL) is an asset.
- Integrity: Absolute ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound professional judgment, and work collaboratively in a diverse, fast-growing workplace.
