Garden Center/Horticulture Team Lead

Zocalo is looking for a high energy addition to our retail team who has experience in plant care and customer service. Your day-to-day would include: taking care of indoor and outdoor plants (including pest management, watering, and transplanting), arranging plant material and planting seasonal containers, helping customers with plant selection and advice, and the general care and maintenance of the greenhouse facilities. This is truly a highly varied position, in a fun, colourful, urban environment.

This position is a full-time position, with availability on weekends a requirement.

The successful candidate will be:

- Flexible and willing to take on a wide range of tasks and responsibilities
- Provide tailored and personable customer service to anyone who comes through the doors
- Be self motivated and organized with their own tasks, as well as delegation of tasks to junior staff members
- Be able to oversee the day-to-day greenhouse operations as well as manage seasonal and special projects
- Able to work physically, stand for long periods of time, and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs comfortably.

Roles and Responsibilities

- You will be responsible for assisting customers with planting questions, plant selection and purchases, and general customer service through the store.
- Fostering a positive environment that is conducive to employee and customer satisfaction, reaching sales targets and continual improvement of Zocalo
- As the Team lead,



you would be responsible for managing the flow of the day including delegation of tasks to other members of staff.
- Attending and participating in staff meetings as necessary
- Promotion of special events, leading workshops and other activities to increase sales and develop long-term customer relationships.
- You will be responsible for the overall presentation of the greenhouse, shed and courtyard, including the receiving area, staff work areas and backyard.
- Contribute to and create special planting and design projects as required, including contributing to the execution of seasonal commercial contracts.
- Maintain and manage maintenance procedures including climate control, fertilizing, Integrated Pest Management and watering.
- Plant and product inventory management.

Assets include, but not limited to:

- Love working with people and plants
- Horticulture diploma, degree or similar education
- Experience in retail and/or restaurant settings
- First Aid Certificate
- WHMIS training
- Experience in building and leading small workshops and events
- Knowledge and experience in Integrated Pest Management systems
- Experience with E-commerce, website management, and inventory management
- Experience in the creation of online content including blogs and social media posting
- Experience with hand tools and small machinery
