The Indigenous Justice Centre of Alberta (“IJC”) is a non-profit law firm committed to improving access to justice for the Indigenous population within Calgary and the surrounding regions. Providing culturally grounded representation to those facing criminal charges, our lawyers and Justice Navigators work together to ensure clients receive excellent legal services with wrap-around supports.

At this time, we are welcoming applications from both Junior and Senior Legal Counsel to assist clients facing prosecution in Calgary before the Alberta Court of Justice or the Court of King’s Bench. In addition, Senior Legal Counsel provide oversight and mentorship to Junior Counsel within the organization. With the assistance of our Justice Navigation team, counsel ensure the rights of Indigenous people are addressed in an effective and efficient manner.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide strong and effective advocacy for clients at every stage of their matter (e.g. bail hearings, trials, dispositions, etc.
- Analyze disclosure materials and conduct necessary legal research, developing comprehensive legal opinions for client consideration.
- Communicate with clients in a timely and effective manner, obtaining clear instructions where required.
- Maintain appropriate file documentation, including timesheets for each file.
- Collaborate with Justice Navigation team to ensure client receives wraparound supports where desired.

- Supports culturally responsive and trauma-informed advocacy, with particular attention to minimizing any time spent incarcerated; and
- Promotes restorative justice approaches where appropriate.

Required Qualifications

1. A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) [If law degree was not obtained in Canada, please provide NCA accreditation]
2. Active membership in the Law Society of Alberta (or immediate eligibility to obtain same)
3. Commitment to the vision and values of the Indigenous Justice Centre, as well as: awareness of Indigenous restorative justice approaches; a robust understanding of Indigenous issues, social justice advocacy, diversity and anti oppressive practice; cultural knowledge and/or understanding of traditional and ceremonial teachings (particularly regarding local Indigenous peoples and diverse Indigenous populations); familiarity with how to work effectively with Elders, Sacred Teachers and Knowledge Holders, following traditional protocols; and understanding of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action.

4. Final candidates will be required to obtain a Criminal Record Check.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Significant experience practicing criminal law;
- Strong oral and written advocacy skills, including experience conducting contested proceedings in court;
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively (including prioritization of tasks to ensure deadlines are met);
- Advanced legal research skills.

Assets, Not Required:

- Indigenous language;
- Familiarity with the Calgary Indigenous Court and its processes.
