About the Department/Region
Context
The Western Region maintains and supports approximately 1,100 NL Housing rental properties on the west coast of Newfoundland through offices in Corner Brook and Stephenville. The region provides a wide range of services, including receiving and processing rental applications; administering rental accounts and lease compliance provisions; providing various client services and tenant relations including eviction prevention, and monitoring, facilitating and administering property maintenance. A variety of programs designed to support low to moderate income households and homeowners are also delivered.
Regional staff members are involved in the delivery of the Provincial Home Repair, Home Modification, Home Energy Savings, Partner Managed Housing, and Rent Supplement Programs.

Duties
Reporting to the Regional Maintenance Manager, the Occupational Health and Safety Officer will support the effective implementation and ongoing administration of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) programs, policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
The officer will promote awareness of and compliance with established OH&S; requirements and applicable federal and provincial legislation, regulations and standards and will ensure staff are informed of the relevant updates or changes to policies, procedures and safe work practices throughout the Western and Labrador Regions. The officer will identify hazards and emerging safety concerns and recommend new or revised safe work practices where required to address workplace risks.
The incumbent will develop and deliver OHS training to staff; conduct workplace inspections, safety audits, assessments and provide guidance to managers and employees on health and safety requirements and responsibilities. The Officer will work collaboratively with employees, supervisors, managers, and contractors to address safety concerns, investigate incidents, promote safe work practices, and ensure compliance with applicable requirements. The Officer will also prepare hazard assessments, daily logs, and technical reports; conduct industrial hygiene and environmental assessments where applicable; investigate workplace hazards; and provide recommendations to address safety concerns.
The officer will also serve as an active member of the OH&S; Committee and contribute to the identification and resolution of the workplace health and safety issues. The Officer will maintain current knowledge of OHS legislation, standards, and best practices through ongoing training and professional development and contribute to the continuous improvement and promotion of a safe and healthy workplace
Screening Criteria
Completion of a 2- or 3-Year Diploma in Safety Engineering Technology (Equivalencies may be considered)
Experience working with occupational health and safety regulations and legislation
Professional safety designations such as the CHSC or CRSP (asset)
Assessment Criteria
Knowledge of business application software (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook) and document management systems
Knowledge of Occupational health and safety regulations and legislation industry standards, and safe work practices.
Knowledge of incident investigation, workplace inspections, hazard/risk assessments, corrective actions, and safety program administration
