POSITION SUMMARY The Operations Manager is responsible for the safe, efficient, and coordinated operation of the entire facility. The role provides leadership and oversight across all departments, personnel, production activities, material movement, equipment, maintenance coordination, inventory, shipping, and site support functions.
The Operations
Manager ensures departments work together to achieve safety, production, quality, customer service, budget, and cost objectives through effective planning, resource use, and cost-conscious decision-making.
Reports To: Site Manager
Primary Scope: All facility departments and operations
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Safety and Compliance
- Lead a strong safety culture and ensure safe work practices are consistently followed throughout the facility.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, permits, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Ensure workplace inspections, safety observations, incident investigations, and corrective actions are completed.
- Confirm employees are trained, competent, and properly equipped to perform assigned work safely.
- Partner with site safety resources to address hazards, manage change, and improve safety performance.
Facility Operations
- Oversee day-to-day operations across all departments and work areas within the facility.
- Coordinate production, yard, shipping, receiving, inventory, maintenance, and support activities to maintain secure and efficient workflow.
- Provide direct oversight of whole-tire receiving, shred product shipments, tire wire loading, GMT tire receiving and shearing, and OTR tire receiving and shearing.
- Monitor operational performance and adjust labour, equipment, and priorities to meet production and customer requirements.
- Ensure site organization, housekeeping, material storage, traffic flow, and inventory controls are maintained.
Leadership and People Management
- Provide leadership and direction to department supervisors, leads, and employees.
- Establish daily priorities, assign resources,
and ensure clear accountability for results.
- Support employee onboarding, training, development, coaching, and performance management.
- Promote teamwork, respectful communication, and effective coordination between departments.
- Address operational concerns promptly and escalate significant risks or business impacts as required.
Planning and Coordination
- Develop and communicate daily and weekly operating plans based on production schedules, inbound volume, shipping demand, staffing, and equipment availability.
- Coordinate department activities to prevent bottlenecks, delays, product contamination, or excess inventory.
- Work with Transportation, Maintenance, Sales, Customer Service, and other support functions to meet site and customer needs.
- Plan for weather, seasonal volume changes, shutdowns, contractor work, and other conditions that may affect operations.
- Participate in budgeting, forecasting, and monthly cost review activities by providing operational input, identifying cost pressures, and supporting corrective actions when spending or performance varies from plan.
- Evaluate labour, equipment, contractor, material handling, and operating decisions with consideration for cost, service impact, safety, and long-term site performance.
Equipment and Maintenance
- Ensure pre-use inspections and required equipment checks are completed and documented.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance, repairs, breakdown response, and equipment availability with Maintenance.
- Ensure equipment is operated safely, within capacity, and only by trained and authorized employees.
- Support equipment replacement,
site improvement, and capital planning by identifying operational needs and risks.
Performance and Continuous Improvement
- Monitor safety, production, quality, downtime, inventory, labour, budget, and cost performance, including trends that affect operating efficiency or financial results.
- Identify and implement practical improvements that reduce risk, waste, delays, rework, and operating cost.
- Support cost-benefit evaluation of operational improvements, equipment needs, staffing changes, and process changes before implementation.
- Use operational data, employee input, inspections, and incident findings to improve processes and controls.
- Complete required operational reports and communicate significant issues, trends, and actions to site leadership.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience leading operations in an industrial, manufacturing, recycling, logistics, or similar environment.
- Proven experience supervising multiple work groups, departments, or operational functions.
- Strong safety leadership, planning, decision-making, organizational, and communication skills.
- Working knowledge of material handling, mobile equipment, production processes, inventory control, and maintenance coordination.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and respond effectively to changing operating conditions.
- Ability to understand budgets, track operating costs, review performance against plan, and support financial decision-making in an operations setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and operational reporting systems.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Industrial environment with regular work in both indoor and outdoor operating areas.
- Exposure to weather, dust, noise, mobile equipment, and active production processes.
- Frequent walking and site presence are required to oversee operations and support employees.
- Overtime, weekend work, and after-hours response may be required based on operational needs.
