Position Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Chief Engineer, the Refrigeration Mechanic operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs refrigeration, HVAC, boiler, and related mechanical systems across Calgary Stampede facilities. The role supports safe, reliable operations, regulatory compliance, event readiness, and on-call emergency response.

What You'll Do

Operate & Monitor Building Systems

- Operate, monitor, and adjust refrigeration, HVAC, boiler, chilled water, condenser water, ventilation, and related systems.
- Monitor building automation systems, respond to alarms and service requests,



and schedule equipment run times for operations and events.
- Inspect mechanical rooms, plant equipment, critical infrastructure, and maintain logs, records, equipment data, and utility readings.

Troubleshoot, Repair & Maintain
- Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on refrigeration, HVAC, and mechanical equipment.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and controls issues affecting compressors, motors, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, evaporators, condensers, and related equipment.
- Complete repairs, test power generation equipment, and document work orders accurately.

Ensure Safety & Compliance
- Operate systems in accordance with legislation, codes, policies, and Calgary Stampede Health, Safety, and Workplace standards.
- Follow lockout/tagout, confined space, hot work, refrigerant handling, and environmental compliance procedures.
- Complete hazard assessments and support emergency response for facility or mechanical system failures.

Support Event Operations

- Ensure building systems are event-ready before, during, and after events.
- Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
- Participate in a rotating on-call schedule, including weekends, events,



and emergencies.
- Provide responsive customer service to internal and external stakeholders.

What You Bring

Required Qualifications

- Alberta Journeyperson Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic Certificate or Red Seal.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
- Strong troubleshooting, customer service, communication, organization, documentation, and time management skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and maintenance management systems.

Assets

- Experience with refrigeration, HVAC, BAS/JCI Metasys, CMMS, and energy management systems in large commercial, institutional, industrial, or public facilities.
- Building Operator Certification, First Aid, WHMIS, or other relevant safety certifications.
- Experience in arenas, convention centres, sports facilities, airports, hospitals, or other large public venues.

Working Conditions

- Work occurs in mechanical rooms, rooftops, event spaces, loading areas, and public facilities, with exposure to noise, odours, dust, fumes, gases, moving equipment, confined spaces, heights, animal dander, and weather.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs (23 kg), bend, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, climb stairs and ladders, and complete visual and sensory inspections.
- On-call rotation and emergency response are required.
