Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Consumer Electronics

Location: Richmond Hill, Ontario

Employment Type: Full-time

Work Arrangement: Hybrid, with regular in-person work in the Richmond Hill area

Salary: CAD $105,000–$135,000 per year, depending on experience

Tamno is developing high-performance consumer electronics and computer peripherals with an emphasis on engineering quality, precision, reliability, and thoughtful product design.

We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with direct professional experience developing small, tightly integrated consumer electronics . This is a hands-on product-development role spanning mechanical design, simulation, prototyping, validation, tooling, and production.

This is a senior-level position and is not intended for new graduates or entry-level candidates. Direct professional experience with small consumer electronics or similarly compact electromechanical products is required.

The successful candidate will work closely with our electrical, firmware, product, and manufacturing teams and will have substantial ownership of mechanical engineering decisions from development through production.

Responsibilities

Own mechanical design and development of compact consumer-electronics products and assemblies

Develop detailed 3D CAD designs suitable for prototype and production manufacturing

Perform structural analysis using finite element analysis (FEA) and use simulation results to guide engineering decisions

Design components and assemblies involving injection-molded plastics, metals, composite materials, fasteners, PCBs, switches, and other tightly integrated components

Perform dimensional and tolerance analysis for assemblies where small variations materially affect product performance

Develop and refine precision mechanical and tactile mechanisms

Balance structural, dimensional, ergonomic, durability, assembly, and manufacturing requirements

Develop prototypes and engineering samples and perform hands-on evaluation and mechanical testing

Diagnose mechanical issues involving tolerances, deformation, fit, assembly, material behaviour, and production variation

Prepare engineering drawings, specifications, tolerance requirements, and manufacturing documentation

Work directly with manufacturing partners in China throughout tooling, validation, pilot production, and production ramp

Review designs for DFM and DFA with manufacturers and tooling suppliers

Review injection-mold tooling proposals, mold-trial samples, dimensional reports, first-article parts, and production samples

Evaluate manufacturing and tooling feedback and determine appropriate engineering changes

Resolve production issues in collaboration with suppliers and manufacturing partners

Must-have qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, such as a BEng, BASc, BSME, or equivalent university-level engineering degree

Minimum 5 years of full-time professional mechanical design or product-development experience after graduation

Minimum 3 years of direct professional experience designing small consumer electronics, compact electronic products, or similarly tightly integrated electromechanical assemblies

Experience taking a compact physical product from mechanical design through prototyping, tooling, validation, and manufacturing

Strong 3D CAD capability and experience creating production-ready mechanical designs

Practical professional experience using finite element analysis (FEA) for structural analysis and design decisions

Strong experience with injection-molded plastic component design

Solid understanding of DFM/DFA, tolerance analysis, tolerance stack-ups, material selection, mechanical interfaces, and production validation

Experience developing products where mechanical components, PCBs, switches, fasteners, and other components must fit within tightly constrained assemblies

Ability to troubleshoot subtle mechanical and dimensional problems through analysis and physical testing

Experience communicating technical requirements and engineering changes with manufacturers or suppliers

Ability to work hybrid in the Richmond Hill, Ontario area and regularly work hands-on with physical prototypes and engineering samples

Preferred qualifications

Direct experience with computer peripherals, input devices, controllers, handheld electronics, wearables, or similarly compact consumer products

Experience designing precision tactile mechanisms involving switches, buttons, springs, flexures, or similar components

Experience with carbon fiber, fiber-reinforced polymers, magnesium, aluminum, or other lightweight structural materials

Experience working directly with manufacturers and tooling vendors in China

Experience reviewing injection molds, mold-trial components, and dimensional inspection results

Experience resolving dimensional variation, warpage, assembly, or tolerance issues in molded components

Experience with high-volume consumer-electronics manufacturing

Experience establishing production tolerances and quality-control criteria

Familiarity with CNC machining, additive manufacturing, composite manufacturing, and rapid prototyping

Experience correlating FEA predictions with prototype or production testing

Who we're looking for

This role is best suited to an engineer who has worked directly on small physical electronic products and is comfortable moving between CAD, simulation, prototypes, tooling, physical testing, and manufacturing.

Experience with sophisticated engineering projects in other fields is valuable, but for this position we specifically require demonstrated experience working with compact consumer-electronics or comparable small electromechanical assemblies .
