Google is looking for curious, driven PhD students to join its Student Researcher Program in Waterloo, Ontario for the Winter-Summer 2027 term. This is a chance to work on real-world, large-scale research problems alongside some of the most talented scientists and engineers in the industry — across teams including DeepMind, Google Research, and Google Cloud.

Unlike a typical internship, this program is built around exploratory, project-based research that directly supports scientific advancement. You'll be matched to a project based on your skills and interests, with the prospect to contribute to breakthrough technologies spanning areas like artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, quantum information science, and more.

About the Role: Student Researcher, PhD

As a Student Researcher at Google, you'll be embedded within a research team working on problems that push the boundaries of computing. Projects vary in duration and scope, but all share a common thread: advancing the state of the art in computer science and related disciplines. You'll collaborate with researchers and engineers who are shaping the future of AI systems, sustainability, algorithm design, and intelligent infrastructure at global scale.

Responsibilities

Student Researchers at Google take on exploratory research projects that span multiple disciplines and teams. The work is collaborative by nature, designed to advance scientific knowledge while also supporting the development of real products and systems used by billions of people.

- Participate in research projects focused on developing solutions for real-world, large-scale problems
- Collaborate with Google researchers and engineers across teams including DeepMind, Google Research, and Google Cloud
- Explore innovative research challenges in areas such as AI, machine learning, natural language understanding, and related fields
- Contribute to the creation of breakthrough technologies that advance computing and intelligent systems
- Support research efforts aligned with Google's priorities in scientific advancement, including sustainability, algorithmic optimization, and AI systems

Requirements / Skills





Google is looking for PhD candidates who are actively engaged in cutting-edge research and bring hands-on experience in computer science or a related technical field. Strong candidates will have a genuine passion for scientific inquiry and the ability to work collaboratively on ambitious, open-ended problems.

- Currently enrolled in a PhD in Computer Science, Linguistics, Statistics, Biostatistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Economics, Natural Sciences, or a related technical field
- Experience in at least one area of computer science such as Natural Language Understanding, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Quantum Information Science, Data Science, or similar
- Currently attending a degree program in Canada and able to be located in the specified country for the full duration of the engagement (preferred)
- Returning to your degree program after completion of the Student Researcher placement (preferred)
- Programming experience in one or more general-purpose languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript, or C/C++ (preferred)
- Research community involvement, including publishing papers in major conferences or journals (preferred)
- Prior research experience through internships, full-time roles, or academic lab positions (preferred)

Currently enrolled in a PhD degree in Computer Science, Linguistics, Statistics, Biostatistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Economics, Natural Sciences, or a related technical field; experience in contributing research communities or efforts, including publishing papers in major conferences or journals.
