Google is looking for curious, driven students to join its Student Researcher Program in Waterloo, Ontario for the Winter–Summer 2027 term. This is a chance to work alongside some of the brightest minds in computing — on teams like DeepMind, Google Research, and Google Cloud — tackling real-world problems at a genuinely massive scale.

Rather than a traditional internship, this role is built around collaborative research projects that push the boundaries of what's scientifically possible. You'll be matched to a project that fits your skills and interests, with work spanning areas from machine learning and artificial intelligence to quantum information science, natural language understanding, and beyond.

About the Role: Student Researcher, BS/MS

As a Student Researcher at Google, you'll be embedded in one of the company's many research teams to explore innovative challenges and contribute to breakthrough technologies. Projects are exploratory by nature — you won't just be executing tasks, you'll be helping shape the direction of research that could affect billions of people. Work is conducted in-person and candidates must be located in the identified country for the full duration of the engagement.

This program is designed to foster genuine academic collaboration, placing students on teams where scientific advancement is the primary goal. Benefits and Salary

Google offers a competitive salary for this role. The pay range in Canada is $99,000–$102,000 CAD depending on job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training, with a 0% bonus target.

Responsibilities

Student Researchers at Google are active contributors to ongoing research initiatives — not passive observers. Your day‑to‑day will involve working collaboratively on exploratory projects, applying technical knowledge to open research questions, and helping advance the state of the art in computing and intelligent systems.

- Participate in research projects focused on developing solutions for real-world, large-scale problems
- Collaborate with research teams across Google, including DeepMind, Google Research, and Google Cloud
- Explore cutting-edge research challenges that support the creation of breakthrough technologies
- Apply expertise in areas such as machine learning, natural language understanding, computer vision, or related fields
- Contribute to foundational research that supports the next generation of intelligent systems across Google products
- Advance scientific knowledge in areas including AI, algorithmic optimization, data science, or quantum information science

Requirements / Skills





Google is seeking students with a strong technical foundation and a genuine passion for research. The ideal candidate is currently enrolled in a relevant degree program, has hands-on experience in at least one area of computer science, and is eager to contribute to meaningful scientific work. Preferred candidates are enrolled in a PhD program and plan to return to their studies after the placement.

- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Linguistics, Statistics, Biostatistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Economics, Natural Sciences, or a related technical field
- Experience in one area of computer science such as Natural Language Understanding, Human Computer Interactions, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Algorithmic Foundations of Optimization, Quantum Information Science, Data Science, or Software Development
- Currently attending a degree program in Canada (preferred)
- Programming experience in one or more general-purpose languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript, or C/C++ (preferred)
- Research experience including internships, full-time positions, or lab work (preferred)
- Contributions to research communities, such as publishing papers in major conferences or journals (preferred)
- Enrolled in a full-time degree program and planning to return after completing the placement (preferred)

Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Linguistics, Statistics, Biostatistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Economics, Natural Sciences, or a related technical field; currently enrolled in a full-time degree program and returning to the program after completion of the internship; currently attending a degree program in Canada.
