Job Purpose
The Business Analyst, Corporate Development is a skills-based analytical role suited to someone who can combine financial acumen, business curiosity, strong data skills, and clear communication to support corporate development priorities. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Corporate Development, this role helps turn business questions into structured analysis, meaningful insights, and practical recommendations that support growth, operational improvement, and strategic decision-making.
The successful candidate will bring strong numerical reasoning, critical thinking, attention to detail, cross-functional collaboration, problem-solving, and presentation skills. They will be comfortable working with incomplete information, asking thoughtful questions, validating assumptions, and translating analysis into clear conclusions for leaders and cross-functional partners.
This role requires someone who is highly proficient with Excel, financial modelling, Power BI, and PowerPoint; confident working with operational, supply, logistics, inventory, pricing, customer, and financial data; and able to create dashboards, summaries, trackers, business cases, and executive-ready materials that make complex information easy to understand.
Duties and Responsibilities
Core Analytical Skills:
- Apply strong analytical thinking to interpret financial, operational, market, and performance data and identify trends, risks, gaps, and opportunities.
- Use advanced Excel and financial modelling skills to build, maintain, and improve analysis tools, business case models, trackers, scorecards, variance summaries, scenario models, sensitivity models, and decision-support templates.
- Develop Power BI dashboards and reporting views that connect data to business priorities, including supply performance, demand trends, margin visibility, project tracking, and leadership decision support.
- Structure ambiguous business problems by clarifying objectives, assumptions, data requirements, constraints, options, and success measures.
- Apply critical thinking and sound judgment to test assumptions, validate information, and connect analysis to practical business outcomes.
Financial & Business Acumen:
- Demonstrate understanding of key business drivers, including revenue, margin, cost, capital investment, productivity, utilization, customer trends, supply reliability, inventory management, logistics efficiency, and operational performance.
- Support business case development by organizing inputs, quantifying benefits, identifying risks, assessing trade-offs, and summarizing financial and operational implications.
- Conduct ROI, cost-benefit, scenario, sensitivity, and variance analysis to support investment, optimization, and strategic planning decisions.
- Analyze supply-related factors for an emulsion and bitumen supplier,
including product availability, demand patterns, supply chain constraints, transportation impacts, terminal/site performance, inventory levels, and customer service implications.
- Interpret data in context and explain what the information means for business performance, supply reliability, decision-making, and value creation.
- Assist in the identification, financial evaluation, and execution of potential M&A; and strategic investment opportunities including financial modeling and preliminary valuation work
Research, Due Diligence & Market Intelligence:
- Gather, organize, and assess internal and external information to support market reviews, product supply analysis, opportunity assessments, business optimization initiatives, and due diligence activities related to emulsion, bitumen, and adjacent supply markets.
- Maintain organized documentation, research files, information request lists, issue logs, action trackers, and decision records.
- Use strong attention to detail to validate source information, reconcile inconsistencies, and flag incomplete, inaccurate, or high-risk inputs.
- Convert large volumes of information into concise summaries, key findings, options, and recommended next steps.
Communication, Presentation & Storytelling:
- Create clear, concise, and visually organized presentations, dashboards, briefing notes, and executive summaries using PowerPoint, Excel, and other reporting tools.
- Translate technical, financial, and operational analysis into plain-language messages that explain the business issue, key facts, implications, options, and recommended action.
- Use robust written and verbal communication skills to support leadership discussions, project updates, investment reviews, and cross-functional working sessions.
- Present insights in a way that is practical, accurate, outcome-focused, and easy for financial and non-financial audiences to act on.
Collaboration, Initiative & Follow-Through:
- Work effectively with Finance, Operations, Legal, HR, Procurement, Engineering and other stakeholders to collect inputs, validate assumptions, and reflect operational realities in analysis.
- Ask thoughtful questions, challenge assumptions appropriately, and build credibility through accuracy, responsiveness, and preparation.
- Manage multiple priorities, timelines, action items, and follow-ups while maintaining quality and attention to detail.
- Take initiative to improve reporting tools, simplify processes, identify better ways of working, and support disciplined execution of corporate development priorities.
Qualifications
Required skills and experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Economics, Accounting, Data Analytics, Engineering, or a related field. Progressing towards and or completion of of CPA, CFA, CBV preferred
- 3-5 years of experience in business analysis, financial analysis, corporate development, strategy, operations analysis, consulting, project analysis, or a similar role requiring strong analytical and communication skills.
- Advanced Excel and modelling skills, including data organization, formulas, lookups, pivot tables, driver-based modelling, scenario analysis, sensitivity analysis, business case modelling, and clear presentation of results.
- Strong PowerPoint skills with the ability to create polished, concise, executive-ready presentations and briefing materials.
- Strong numerical reasoning, data interpretation, business writing, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work with ambiguity, organize complex information, ask good questions, validate assumptions, and identify practical options.
- Experience preparing dashboards, KPI reports, business cases, financial or operational analysis, supply analysis, project trackers, or management reporting packages.
- Strong Power BI skills are preferred, including experience building dashboards, data models, report views, and visual summaries; experience with ERP systems, JD Edwards, market research, due diligence, supply chain analysis, or continuous improvement initiatives is considered an asset.
- Professional maturity, discretion with confidential information, strong stakeholder service orientation, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
