Western Sociology has a strong commitment to research excellence, an outstanding reputation for teaching and mentorship of students, and is known for making real world impact. Our department has unique strengths in Social Inequality, Population Dynamics, and Quantitative Methods and we do research and offer courses across four key areas of sociology: Health and the Life Course, Power and Justice, Social Demography and Migration, and Work and the Economy.

The Research Associate position is for a study that seeks to generate new knowledge about discretionary power and the justice system in Canada.

Responsibilities

The Research Associate will support the research activities for qualitative projects in adherence with ethics protocols and guidelines. The incumbent will assist with a thorough literature search of new and relevant academic articles, assessing the quality and relevance of the articles found. The Research Associate will summarize and interpret the key findings of academic articles, conduct data collection, and perform qualitative data entry.

Qualifications

Education:

- Completion of Master's program in Sociology or Criminology

Experience:

- 1 year of work experience supporting research in a related technical field

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:

- Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
- Proven experience conducting comprehensive literature searches
- Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public




- Experience with qualitative analysis software (NVivo)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Solid organization and time management skills
- Ability to understand legal language
- Computer skills with the ability to learn and use software programs
- Familiar with legislative frameworks in Canada
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
- Verbal and written communication skills with the ability to document technical information
