Scorpio Masonry is a busy masonry company with over 50 years of experience in the industry. We are seeking a Safety Officer to join our team on a full time, permanent basis.

PURPOSE

To implement, maintain and promote the Scorpio Safety Program and safety culture through orientations, safety training, safety meetings, job site visits, incident investigations, injury management and enforcing safe work policies and procedures. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

- Conduct new hire safety orientations.
- Promote a safety culture through but not limited to jobsites visits, conducting periodical inspections, and running safety meetings.
- Review, update and create Safety Policies as required.
- Ensure Safe Work Practices (SWP) and Safe Job Procedures (SJP) are current and complete, creating new ones as required.
- Initiate, promote, implement and maintain safety projects and initiatives.
- Oversee and ensure that safety training requirements for employees are up to date (First Aid, Fall Protection, Forklift training, etc.).
- Maintain inventory of safety equipment and supplies and distribute as required.
- Review and sign off on all site safety documentation.
- Ensure compliance with project specific safety plans and policies.
- Create Project Specific Safety Plans as required.
- Co-Chair the JOSH Committee meetings.
- Respond to job site incidents/injuries, and if possible, transport the injured worker to a medical facility.
- Conduct thorough Incident Investigations and initiate corrective actions.
- Effectively manage ongoing WCB claims by corresponding with both the Case Manager and employee, protecting Scorpio’s interest and ensuring the employee receives the benefits they are entitled.
- Conduct the annual maintenance internal Safety Audit to maintain the Company’s COR certification.
- Create Tool Box topics to be distributed to site foremen.




- Present on Safety during foremen’s and management meetings.
- Attend “startup” meetings for new projects.
- Complete safety prequalifications as required by clients.
- Other relevant safety duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

- Solid working knowledge of WorkSafeBC and OH&S; legislative requirements under the Act, Legislation and Code.
- Working knowledge of the Workers’ Compensation Board claims management process.
- The ability to maintain confidences and ensure the confidentiality of information and records.
- Organized and ability to effectively prioritize.
- Solid interpersonal skills and sound written and verbal communication skills in English.
- The ability to deliver presentations to all levels of the organization.
- Self-motivated who works effectively with minimal supervision.
- The ability to work with others in a team environment.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

- Assets: Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO), Construction Safety Officer (CSO), Certificate in OHS, Certified COR Internal Auditor training, or other applicable qualification/designation.
- Certified in Standard First Aid.
- Training and experience with incident and accident reporting and investigation.
- Must possess a valid drivers license.
- Field experience in construction/masonry is an asset.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

- Direct report to the District Manager.
- Daily interaction with Field supervisors and workers.
- Ongoing interaction with General Contractors regarding their Safety Policies and Programs.
- Ongoing interaction with the BCCSA and Worksafe BC.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.78-$39.00 per hour
