Your Opportunity:

The Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC) Addictions and Mental health Program is a group of agile multidisciplinary teams that work together to ensure our patients have the best standard of care and experience. Our site runs six Addictions and Mental Health Programs; Two General Psychiatry Inpatient Units, Day Hospital Program, Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES), Consultation Liaison, and the Short Stay Unit (SSU). As a dedicated Registered Nurse (RN) / Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) on SSU, you have a pivotal role as an integral member of our multidisciplinary healthcare team. Focused on in-patient acute psychiatric nursing, you will engage in collaborative efforts to provide holistic and comprehensive care, addressing the diverse needs of individuals, families, and communities. In this position, you will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to develop a robust plan of care to stabilize patients suffering from acute psychiatric illness. Your responsibilities include delivering targeted interventions, with an awareness of evaluation to modify approaches based on evolving patient needs. Your scope of practice will encompass physical and mental status assessments, de-escalation, and conflict-resolution. Additionally, you will engage in discharge planning that promotes, maintains, and restores mental health, while preventing mental illness injury, and disability. In this role, you will also be responsible for engaging therapeutic 1:1’s, applying the concepts of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Dialectal Behavioural Therapy (DBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI). You will also care for individuals with substance use and addictions concerns, monitoring for withdrawal, initiating treatment, and providing supportive care.

you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of Recovery Alberta. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $40.76 - $55.79 per hour. Upon being entered into the register as a Registered Nurse, the rate of pay will be adjusted in accordance with the UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA).



Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum of 1 year of continuous Addictions and Mental Health experience within the last 3 years with an FTE. New grads who have completed a final preceptorship on SSU will be considered. Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced and high intensity environment under pressure and handle competing priorities. Demonstrated leadership, organizational and clinical skills in addition to being self-directed and able to work collaboratively in a team environment required. Knowledge of verbal de-escalation techniques required. Working knowledge of Psychotropic medications required. Knowledge of Mental Health Act and Adult Guardianship and Trusteeship Act. Knowledge of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral (DBT), and/or Motivational Interviewing (MI). Experience in administering the Mental Status examination. Experience in various risk assessments (i.e., Suicide risk, Homicidal risk, violent risk). Within the last 5 years, 1-3 years proven skills and experience in psychiatric assessment, medical assessment and crisis intervention. Additionally, must have familiarity of the expectations of medical capabilities within mental health and be able to provide treatment as directed, assess potential difficulties, and respond to medical emergencies. Demonstrated organizational and clinical skills in addition to being self-directed and able to work collaboratively in a team environment required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) preferred. Certification in DBT, CBT, and/or MI an asset. Recent nursing experience in an acute in-patient psychiatric setting is preferred. Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) CPMHN(C) certification an asset. Master's of Nursing (MN) an asset. Knowledge of trauma-informed care is preferred.
